Dr.
Phillip Gawthrop, a chiropractor has been in family practice for the
past 23 years. He has always been interested in offering not only pain
relief care but also structural spinal corrective care. Recently, he
has added Neurological Stress Relief Therapy (NSRT) thru the BAX 3000.
Common symptoms helped by the BAX 3000 include: sneezing, runny nose,
itchy eyes, coughing, skin irritations, digestive issues, IBS/Acid
Reflux, Celiac Disease, congestion, sinusitis, ADHD, Autism, et al.
Suffering personally with allergies to certain foods, seasonal
pollens, and poison ivy, Dr. Gawthrop took a special interest in the
BAX 3000 when he heard of other chiropractors getting relief on
themselves, their families and their patients. After being treated
himself achieving good results, he has added this therapy to his
practice.
Remarkable story and testimony:
A 48
year old lady that had suffered with menstrual cramps every single
month for more than 35 years has now gone seven months without pain.
Before chiropractic care, she would easily consume half a bottle of
Advil during her cycle. With chiropractic adjustments, pressure point
therapy, and diet changes there was relief to the point that she could
make it thru a cycle without Advil, but, the next month the cramps
would return. After being treated with the BAX 3000, she has been 7
consecutive months free of menstrual discomfort of any kind.
“We have
already personally seen patients find relief from food allergies to:
banana's, watermelon's, wheat, dairy, corn and wine. Pet allergies to
cats and dogs. Contact dermatitis with grass clippings and poison ivy.
Airborne allergies to ragweed and dust. We've also seen people
accomplish more and better sleep.” “This technology has easily been
the most exciting thing that I've added to my practice in 20 years!” “
I can't say that I've helped everybody with everything they've come in
with yet, but we've helped almost everyone that has come in with at
least part of their symptoms.”
“It's allowed me to reach a whole new level of service for patients.”
is a quote that sums up Dr Phil's outlook on practice. He's most happy
when he's helping others achieve better health. In his free time he
enjoys time outdoors hiking, fishing, hunting and serving as an
extreme terrain ATV guide.

Q & A
with Your Friendly Pharmacist:
Joe Nowell, Pharm. D., FACVP, FACA
What
brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re
involved with?
My original
degree was in graphic design. As I studied my way through pharmacy
school I found that custom compounding medication (preparing remedies
from scratch) maximized my training as a pharmacist as well as
provided an outlet for artistic expression. Let’s be honest here,
counting out pills all day long can put a damper on creativity.
However, when a physician or patient calls up and asks for the
impossible, I have to find a solution. This demand for answers forces
me to look in many different areas. For example, in preparing certain
eye medications, I found that adding certain homeopathic remedies
stopped the stinging effect caused by the active ingredient. This type
of open mindedness has allowed me to succeed where others fail.
Tell us
about yourself:

Owner/Partner of Botanical Shield Life Products (Nutraceutical

Director of Product Development for Gold Creek (Health Products

Co-Host of “Your Prescription for Health” a Talk Radio Show 100.3FM
WNOX
If you could have lunch with any
person, living or deceased, who would it be?
I think it
would be interesting to eat at my favorite restaurant, The Taste of
Thai, with Benjamin Schalahter, the inventor of Premarin (a synthetic
estrogen extracted from pregnant horse urine) and ask him what the
&^%$?!! he was thinking. I wouldn’t give that medicine to my dog.
What do you like to do in your
spare time? What do you do for fun?
Drugs. Isn’t
that obvious? I host a radio show every Saturday at 4pm on WNOX
100.3FM. It is called “Your Prescription for Health.” It allows me
to discuss what is on my mind in regards to functional, alternative
and allopathic medicine. It is a call-in show…so call me.
Are you married, have you ever
been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
My lovely wife,
Angela, and I have four daughters; Jane Francis, Sarah, Lillian and
Caroline. Yes, I am surrounded by estrogen. Even my two dogs (Itsy &
Bay Bay) are female. I like to think of us as a progressive couple.
By progressive I mean that we are in a trial marriage. If we don’t
like each other after 99 years, we will call it quits.
Where do you see yourself in five
years?
I told my staff
that the traditional medicine model is broken as well as the
traditional pharmacy model. Over the next few years I hope to perfect
the integrative pharmacy model. A pharmacy that delivers the best of
traditional medicine, specialty compounded medicine and natural
medicine. I believe that this is what a pharmacy should strive to
deliver to its patients. On a lighter note, I have been toying with
the concept of “Dance for a Discount.” Under this marketing technique
a patient, if brave enough, would jump up on a platform and dance a
jig. The discount would be based on how well we like your groove. I
also would like to write a book…20 to be exact. I have a list of
topics that I think need to be addressed. But as you can tell, I
don’t have a lot of free time at the moment.
How would you like to see medical
and alternative health in this country grow or change?
I believe that
it is imperative that traditional medicine recognize the implication
of drug induced nutrient deficiency. We can no longer assume that
since a product is FDA approved, that it is the only choice for a
patient. Some of the most effective practitioners are the ones that
are not afraid to use every modality available to them. Whether the
option is an herb, mineral, vitamin, nutrient, chemical, poison,
potion, water, dilution, drug, massage, adjustment, touch or prayer,
it should be our duty as health practitioners to determine the best
pathway to health for our patients. I have high hopes for the first
graduates from Lincoln Memorial University School of Osteopathic
Medicine in Harrogate, Tennessee. They have at least two teachers
that emphasize “Functional Medicine.” This means that in just a few
short years we could have close to one hundred physicians practicing
in the East Tennessee area that think this way.
So tell me how you got started in
your work.
I have been
dispensing medication since I was four. It started behind a big chair
in our living room. I dosed my brother and myself with some medicine
(I don’t remember what it was). That same day we both experienced the
taste of Ipecac. It also was the same day we both experienced
projectile vomiting. Since then, it has been a natural progression as
I follow into the family business of pharmacy.
How would you describe your
pharmacy to someone?
It is actually
two pharmacies in one. The Fresh Pharmacy is located inside East
Tennessee Discount Drugs. The pharmacy is similar to a health food
store on steroids. A patient can choose which modality necessary to
address a disease state. Whether they need an allopathic medicine,
homeopathic medicine, natural medicine or a custom built medication
this is the pharmacy to come to. Remember, we do drugs so you don’t
have to.
What services do you offer?
Bioidentical
Hormone Replacement Therapy, Pain Management, Diabetes Care,
Nutraceuticals, Vitamins & Minerals, Herbals, Homeopathic Remedies,
Veterinarian Medicines, Sterile Injectables, Opthalmics, Autism
Solutions, Consultations, Durable Medical Equipment, Mastectomy
Products, Standard Medicines, Vaccinations, Transdermals, Sublinguals,
Rectal Rockets, Gifts & Collectibles, and a few more things…
What led you into this business
and opening up your own place?
As a
compounding pharmacist I have a unique perspective on healthcare. I
see which patients benefit from which treatments. Whether alternative
or allopathic, some protocols work better than others. I see which
practitioners seem to be successful with patients and which
practitioners are not. Over time, I noticed my patients getting worse
under the care of traditional medicine but responding favorably when
using natural products. I continued to receive unusual requests for
medicines that no one else would provide. So, one day, I had an
epiphany (some refer to it as an entreprenal seizure) and created
Tennessee’s first compounding only pharmacy.
Do you feel what you provide is
holistic health care, alternative health care, complementary health
care services or do you care what it’s labeled?
I refer to it
as “Integrative Health Care,” though it has been labeled one time or
another as all of the above. It falls into a category that is more
“Logic Medicine” or “Functional Medicine.” If you felt great several
years ago…what is different now? Is it possible that a deficiency in
a mineral or vitamin could be causing you complaint? If so, replace
what’s missing (functionality). Whether it is standard medicine,
compounded medicine or natural medicine we must use whatever is
necessary to bring health and balance to the patient.
What is your most proud
accomplishment thus far with your business?
Our existence
allows us to provide hope and answers to patients who have otherwise
failed to find them in the current medical establishment. Being able
to tell a patient what they are feeling or experiencing and why it is
happening is not only refreshing for them but professionally
satisfying for us. One example I like to share is the patient that
presented with Bell’s palsy (a paralysis of one side of the face).
She looked like she had just had a stroke. Traditional medicine calls
for a steroid pack and antibiotic which could take months to show
results. But, we suggested a transdermal application to the face of
the active form of vitamin B-12 (Methylcobalamin). Five days later,
her face snapped back to normal. The physician was shocked, the
patient was relieved and we just sat back and smiled. Business as
usual for us. That’s what patients deserve and in my opinion, that’s
what every pharmacy should deliver.

Dr.
John Ross, DC |
|
|
|
Q
& A with Dr. John Ross:
What brought you to
Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved with?
I had a strong desire to help people without
resorting to drugs. My grandmother used lots of home remedies for the
relatives.
Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less:
Born long time
ago in Phoenix, AZ. Moved to Macon, Georgia at age three. Decided
early that I wanted to do something to help folks. Started to be a
lawyer then switched to becoming a chiropractor. I had been a
chiropractic patient since age fourteen for a trampoline accident.
Ultimately went to Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, IA.
Been in practice since 1975.
What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
My hobby is
pictures, not just taking them but creating them. I use some to
decorate my office.
Are you married,
have you ever been married? Kids? Pets?
I have been
married for over thirty years, I have two children Jennifer (26) and
Eric (21),
a fat dog, and two psycho cats.
What are you most
proud of in your life?
My family first and
helping patients second.
Where do you see yourself in five
years?
Still working but slowing down and being selective as to the cases I
take on.
How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this
country grow, change
or develop?
The public needs to
be more aware that their body does the healing and not drugs. The
public needs to take a more active role in their own health,
including rest, exercise, nutrition and lifestyle changes.
Tell us more about
how you got started in your work?
I got into
chiropractic because my personal chiropractor convinced me that it
was the way to go.
I had a neck injury from a trampoline and was
under care for several months. I saw firsthand how I could heal
without drugs. I saw my immune system get stronger as a side
benefit.
Do you feel
what you provide is holistic health care, alternative health care,
complementary health care services or do you care what it’s labeled?
I started as an
alternative practitioner. As the public evolved in their
understanding of health, my profession has become more mainstream.
What are 5
things you think the public needs to know about holistic health
but doesn’t?
1. The basis
for all medicine is the holistic approach.
2. Holistic health traces its origins back long before the first
organized medical profession.
3. If the public would adopt a holistic approach to health from an
early age the effects of illnesses would be less.
4. Holistic health information can be found easily on the Internet.
5. A lot of current research reveals that a very effective approach
to health is to improve natural host (body) defenses which is what
the holistic health approach encompasses.

|
|
|
Q
& A with Ajeet:
Tell us about yourself in 60 words or
less...
I have given up all my past cords,
bonds and bandages of my childhood, of what I was or was not to my
parents, my past lives, and my subconscious to my inner self. I have come
to move into my truest feeling, acknowledge the past and move on. I am
always grateful and I love my son beyond words. And I think I want to move
out of this home and start a whole new life with my kids, traveling and
living.
What is the one thing you would most like us to know about yourself?
I am single and happily living my life to the fullest!
If
you’re not in alternative health full time, what kind of work do you do?
The other work I do is onstage as actress, dancer and singer with a number
of local theatre and dance companies. I also tutor children at home in
yoga & meditation. Right I'm developing a one-woman performance-art piece
entittled ‘Aprons’. It's an autobiographical humor piece about growing up
in Catholic in New Jersey, in a dually-diagnosed kitchen.
Do you feel what
you provide is holistic health care, alternative health care,
complementary health care services or do you care what it’s labeled?
I call my services complementary health care because it
complements your already healthy life, your desire to live perfectly, live
your life’s dream and inspire yourself to do it for your whole life—happy,
healthy, holy--
What are 5 things
you think the public needs to know about holistic health but doesn’t?
Number 1. It all begins with YOU. You in the beginning, in the
middle, in the end.
Number 2. Let someone else love you.
Number 3. Don’t look back, look within.
Number 4. Holistic Health is the hole in you that you need to look into.
Number 5. The teacher is within you ‘Doctor’s diagnose, God cures’ (Yogi
Bhajan).
If you could have lunch with any
person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
I’ve always wanted lunch with 2 people. This may seem broad,
but it’s Robin Williams and the Dali Llama. The former because I am an
actor and RW is one of the best and funniest and deepest, real people and
the latter because his awesome humility and strength of character
continually inspire me to do my best. And, they are both alive, so no
excuses—Make a Date!!
What do you think
the publics’ perception about holistic health is?
Perception of holistic
health is based on a television commercial of one who takes vitamins, who
takes a walk, laughs
to keep sane, who takes a bubble bath, gets a serene massage. It’s what
you DO to your body. Public perception is about
appearances-on-the-outside, it’s certainly not the perception that every
dis-ease is based in the spirit first, in the mind, in the deep recesses
of the unconscious-- we could not get that deep, Generally, the public
perception is artificial and does not touch the immense power of the human
spirit’s capacity for totality and oneness in all affairs of life.
What is the most
remarkable thing you’ve seen in your business? Inspirational story.
There are 2 inspirational and awe-inspiring stories. I will
tell of one. A dear friend and former yoga mom who used to take class for
years with me, was shot by an assailant’s bullets last year at her church.
She and her son were attending church when a man took out a gun from a
guitar case and started shooting. At that moment, Tammy became all of us.
In our classes, we were dedicated moms teaching our kids yoga; we wanted
to start a children’s museum; we shared dreams. When I saw her life, her
stamina, her incredible YES that said, I will not die; I will fight for
this life. I will go on, my life changed. She knew I was there and
squeezed my hand. I stayed every day until she got better, along with
family & friends. When I saw Tammy a year later, she was completely
healed, her life full and happy and she took me aside and said, ‘Ajeet,
whatever you did, helped, I don’t have words’. Neither do I, Tammy.
What is your most proud
accomplishment thus far with your business?
I am someone who brings people together, who sees no one as a
stranger. The most amazing accomplishment thus far with my business as
been to see it grow from something I loved doing with my friends in my
living room, to a full fledged business! Last week at my Sunday class at
New Moon Yoga, people were sweating, singing and working those hard yoga
postures together as one people. Watching it unfold right before me and me
getting to be upfront as teacher, is amazing and and awe-inspiring.
What
is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services
that you feel they don’t?
I want them to understand that yoga is a way of life that
affirms them! It is a practice of one-ness within you, not just exercise!
It is so private, so all encompassing, so fulfilling. But if it weren’t
difficult, it would have lost its flavor long ago. And, like love, it
never goes away; it continually expands the more it is practiced. Once you
have yoga in you, it lasts forever.

Dr. Rick Pimental-Habib, PhD, CCH
|
·
What brought you to
Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved with?
When I was in graduate school, studying very traditional Freudian
and neo-Freudian-based psychology, I felt that while this study
provided me with a solid theoretical foundation for psychotherapy, I
realized that there were many other disciplines that intrigued me.
So, for the past 23 years I’ve been integrating a variety of schools
of thought into my work. For example, my doctorate is in Clinical
Hypnotherapy, which allows me to offer alternative tools in my work
with clients.
·
What is the one thing
you would most like us to know about yourself?
I continually work to practice what I preach.
·
If you could have
lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
Katherine Hepburn. Can you imagine a more opinionated,
stimulating, glamorous icon to have lunch with?
·
What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
Being an only child my friends are my
family, so my (very limited) spare time is often spent with them,
eating out,
hanging out, going to theatre and concerts, and
laughing a lot. I also love to travel, and have traveled much
of the
world. But as you might imagine, being a busy
person I highly value my
“alone downtime,” and spend time daily in
quiet meditation.
·
Are
you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
My only child is my 6 year old
Boston Terrier wonderpup, Betty Lou. (She’s a southern gal, so she
got two names.) Readers of my column know her well.
·
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself running a thriving
wellness center, with a professional focus on mind/body/spirit
wellness. I also see myself writing – more books, columns, articles
– well into retirement.
·
How
would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country
grow, change or etc.
I would love to see a greater
synthesis of medical and alternative health advance our knowledge of
what being healthy really means; to have multi-faceted disciplines
working in harmony, learning from both ancient and modern healing
modalities; and using as models for health and wellness philosophies
such as Dr. Andrew Weill’s integrative medicine approach.
·
So tell me about
how you got started in your work?
I came by it pretty honestly: I was the kid
everyone went to with their problems.
·
How would you
describe your studio to someone?
I recently moved my psychotherapy practice from St.
Elmo to larger quarters in
East Ridge. The new space
includes
an indoor/outdoor waiting area with a rock/sculpture
garden overlooking woods in a very quiet, private setting. It also
includes two offices and a large group space.
·
What services do you
offer?
I offer individual psychotherapy, relationship
counseling, clinical hypnotherapy, and from time to time I offer
various
groups and classes – wellness, bereavement, meditation,
and more. A colleague is doing an “Absolute Beginners”
yoga class in the group room, and the second office is
ready for a hands-on healer – massage, acupuncture, etc.—
who may be seeking a part-time space to use. Also, as
many CHEO folks know, I write a weekly mind/body/spirit
column in the
Chattanooga Pulse called “Shrink
Rap,” and I’ve written two self-help books.
·
What led you into
this business and opening up your own place?
Since youth I’ve been drawn to the healing
professions. And I enjoy being my own boss.
·
Do you feel what
you provide is holistic health care, alternative health care,
complementary health care
services or do you care
what it’s labeled?
I don’t really care. What I do is the result of
two-plus decades of study and practice. I had a great professor
once who
told me that first we learn from our teachers, then we
learn from our clients. I whole-heartedly agree.
·
What is your most
proud accomplishment thus far with your business?
My proudest accomplishment is something I share with my
clients. What I mean by that is, people come to me for
help, often when at their most vulnerable, and this
help requires a safe, non-judgmental, and supportive atmosphere.
I believe my clients feel that with me. It’s all about
the relationship.

Isn’t it great to be full
of energy and vitality? I love being healthy and feeling great, but
there was a time when I wasn’t doing so well. Even though I was eating
healthier than current standards, my health starting failing, and I
eventually was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Epstein-Barr Virus, Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome, along with digestive issues. I sought out
alternative help and not only regained my health, but had more energy and
vitality than ever before!
My curiosity got the best of
me. I began to read and study everything I could get my hands on to answer
the questions I had. Here are just a few:
| |
What are we doing to make ourselves so toxic?
Why take these specific herbs and supplements?
Why do herbs support different systems in the body?
What about metabolic and digestive enzymes?
Why should we combine our food a certain way?
What role does balancing pH play in wellness?
Why can’t everyone take the same supplements?
Why can’t everyone take the same supplements and get the same
benefits? |
|
I wanted to get to the bottom of it
all, so I began my journey into alternative health.
What causes hormone imbalance,
weight gain, hair loss, arthritis, joint pain, autoimmune disorders,
chronic fatigue, food cravings, headaches, cancer? Why does a person get
one thing and another person doesn’t? The list goes on and on!
I was an interior designer in
Atlanta when I decided to go into the field of alternative health and
share my knowledge with others. I educate people starting with the Eat
Right for Life Program tailoring it to meet the specific needs of each
individual. Everyone’s chemistry is different! The more you know about
your body, the more you can be in charge of your health. It is
my passion to educate people and equip them with the “tools” necessary for
health and vitality.

Q & A with Carole:
·
What brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re
involved with?
I
have always been intuitive and use to read palms. People would say to me
what are you doing, I feel so relaxed when you hold my hand that I would
say I wish I could heal with my hands not knowing there was anything out
there that did that. I met a wonderful lady at a metaphysical club where
I was doing a talk on Palmistry and she came up to me after and said to
me. I think you could heal with your hands and I was flabbergasted…So I
asked her what she meant and my journey with Reiki began…
·
Tell us about yourself:
I was born in
the South of France to a French mother and Canadian
father. My mother
was very intuitive and my dad was a people reader extraordinaire…My father
family migrated from Canada to Worcester Massachusetts where we lived till
I was 8 ½ and my mother took us to France to meet our grandparents for the
first time. At the time the intent was to stay there and live…My parents
were splitting up…Things changed and my parents reunited and we moved
straight into Florida…So Florida was my home till my senior year of high
school when my father was transferred to Huntsville, Alabama…I thought it
was the end of the universe. Alabama was nothing like what I was use
to…However there were many good things there… a good many foreigners lived
there because of the military base and so many weekends were spent with a
small entourage of foreigners gathered at my home for dinner. It was a
conglomeration of French, Italian, Korean, Chinese, all in broken English
but we made ourselves understood and it was grand. I graduated from High
School, worked several years at various jobs as a secretary with Thiokol
Chemical and Boeing Aircraft, saved enough money and went to college at
the University of North Alabama (UNA). I met my husband there and he
graduated before me, we married he went off to finish law school and I
joined him as soon as I graduated which was only one semester…
I
taught high school English there for several years until we moved to
Chattanooga. I wanted to go back to Florida, my husband wanted to
go back to Alabama so we compromised and moved to Chattanooga in
1972…
I worked as a Probation Officer for almost 5 years until I got a job
with IBM and worked there for 16 years as a Systems Engineer,
retired early and worked as a contract worker on computers and was
hired by TVA and was there for 10 years..retiring in 2007. I have
been doing energy healing work for the last 16 years.

· If
you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
1) My family was safe, healthy and aware of the spiritual laws and
applied them to their daily lives.
2)
That Medicine and Doctors
know that those that coming to see them are presently aware of their own
healer
inside of them and encourage that gift of hope and
optimism..
3) That our earth ‘s air, water and people are clean and healing as we
speak.
·
What is the one thing you would most like us to know about yourself?
That I love to
dance
·
If
you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be
and why?
Mary Magdalen or Victoria Woodhull first woman to run for President brave
and smart...
·
What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
I love living on
the river. I spend a lot of time with my flowers gardening…I love to read,
doing energy work on people and talking to my friends about spiritual
ideas. I just took up belly dancing which is not as easy as it might
sound….
·
Are
you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
I was
married for 25 years. Have one son Zachary and no pets at the present
time although my son keeps wanting to get me a kitten.
·
If
you’re not in alternative health full time, what kind of work do you do?
I have
done many jobs in my life, teacher, probation officer, counselor for

wonderful expansive energy…
·
How
would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand? How would
you like to see
medical and alternative
health in this country grow, change or etc.
I would
love to see the Medical community
co-join with Complementary
medicine. The health of an individual encompasses more then just the
body. The spirit
and the mind plays a part in
all of us and why should it be separated at a time when the three are most
in need of
joining together...
·
So
tell me about how you got started in your work?
I started out reading Palms as a young girl. I always felt things about
people even people I didn’t know in a store..would stand next to them and
things would flood my mind about them. I have learned to ground myself..
I started out as an English teacher, then became a probation officer and
from there went to work for IBM and was trained as a Systems Engineer, my
last position was as a Technical Writer. My left brain needed to be
tweaked so that I feel now with my energy work I am more balanced

of the first floor of my home.
I live on the river, it is very
peaceful and relaxing a great healing place.

care, complementary health care
services or do you care what
it’s labeled?
Yes and Yes
·
What are 5 things you think the public needs to know about holistic
health but doesn’t?
-
That it has been around a long time
-
That holistic health is what is says
Emphasizing the importance of
the whole and the interdependence of its parts. You can’t separate the
heart from the brain..it is all interconnected and when all parts are
used as it was intended it brings a wonderful peaceful adjunct to
healing…
-
There is something in there for
everyone…it is not partial
-
Holistic health is empowering
-
Holistic health is the key to a healthy vibrant life…
·
What do you think the publics’ perception about holistic health is?
Don’t really
care….each person has to find their own string…Those that get it get it
those that don’t don’t so it doesn’t really matter to me what the public’s
perception is…when it’s their time they’ll find it…
·
In
10 years holistic health will be... the
main avenue for healing and the old will become new again…
·
How
do you get into this field?
Interest in people and what makes the
world go round
·
What advice do you have for people looking to get into this field?
Read everything
you can get your hands on,
join
groups of like minded people, test out many modalities and find a mentor…
·
What
is your most proud accomplishment thus far with your business?
That
people come back to see me
and
write letters saying they are far better now then they were…and are so
grateful. I didn’t heal them I just helped
them
remove the blocks so they could heal themselves.
·
What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your
services that you feel they don’t?
That this is more natural then anything they have or will have ever done
for themselves….If I can help one person
become aware
of the changes they can make in their lives to heal, then I have done what
I was suppose to do on
this earth…

We Believe

opportunity. Here at
Ardis Healing Center
we offer Comprehensive Care to the MIND, BODY & SPIRIT by removing barriers to Healing. |

|
Q & A with Kate:
·
What brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re
involved with?
o
I wanted
to positively affect the health and lives of as many people as possible
without the use of prescription drugs and unnecessary surgeries. My
undergraduate education was in exercise science and chiropractic was a
perfect fit for me. Once in chiropractic school I realized what an
important role that proper nutrition plays in terms of overall health and
really found my niche and passion in Nutrition Response Testing.
·
Tell us about yourself in 100 words or less
o
My name
is Kate and I am the youngest of four girls. I grew up in a small town
that I couldn’t wait to leave, so I enlisted in the Navy 11 days after
high school graduation. It was an amazing experience that afforded me the
opportunity to travel the world and grow into the person that I wanted to
be. I then completed my education and developed my passion for
chiropractic and nutrition. I am amazed by the body’s ability to heal
itself when given the chance.
·
Where are you from? How long in the Greater Knoxville area?
o
I am originally from
Kenton Ohio. While finishing up chiropractic school in Chicago I met a
lady named Mary Anne at a nutrition seminar. She convinced me that I
would love East Tennessee, and she was right. I moved down to
Maryville last September. This
is such a wonderful place to call home.
·
Are
you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
o
I am not
married, as of yet, but have found the love of my life in Tennessee. He
is a truly amazing man and I thank God everyday for bringing us together.
He has three children: Julia, 5, Connor, 7 and Aden, 9. Julia plays
soccer and the boys are obsessed with football. I am inspired by their
boundless energy. We also have a boxer, Cassie, and a pug-a-poo, Phoebe.
·
What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
o
Spare
time is hard to come by these days, but we make the most of it when we
find it. Right now we are working on building a fence for the dogs and
getting our vegetable gardens planted. We hike in the mountains and
paddle the river as often as possible.
·
What are you most proud of in your life?
o
Doing
what others told me I could not do. The only limitations we have in life
are those we impose upon ourselves.
·
Where do you see yourself in five years?
o
Within
the next five years I would like to see our healing center moved out of a
medical complex and into a restored Victorian style home. My dream is to
have many healers under one roof working toward a common goal.
·
What services do you offer?
o
At the Ardis Healing
Center we offer chiropractic services as well as nutritional healing. It
has been
my experience that when chiropractic and nutritional therapies are
used in conjunction, the results
increase
dramatically. We combine kinesiology with Nutritional Response
Testing to find and
remove barriers to healing. The most common barriers include heavy metals,
toxic chemicals, food
allergies,
immune challenges and scars. Once these barriers are removed and the proper
building
blocks are added, the body
can naturally heal itself. Nutritional counseling and meal planning
are
additional services offered. We are also home to Penny Crips, LMT of Almost
Heaven Therapeutic
Massage and Dr. Suzanne Jonas, Ed D. of
Inner Harmony.
·
Do
you feel that what you provide is holistic health care, alternative health
care, complimentary health care services or do you care what it’s labeled?
o
Hopefully, one day soon, what I do will be considered main-stream health
care. It would be nice not
to be
someone’s ‘last hope’ or ‘last resort’ and instead be the place they turn
to first. You can put
whatever
label you like
on what I do, my only concern is that people feel better when they leave.
·
What do you think the publics’ perception about holistic health is?
o
I think
that the perception of holistic health is changing from ignorance to
curiosity. We have been
brain
washed by western medicine for so long into believing that medications and
surgeries are the
only way
to ‘handle’ the symptoms of disease. There has to be another way. I
believe that people
are
getting fed up and are ready to start accepting more responsibility for
their health and well being
and are actively searching out
alternatives.

Q and A with Terry:
· What
brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved
with? Well….. At the time I was
working as a disability examiner, determining cases for social security.
I started looking into graduate programs and although I had had quite a
bit of acupuncture personally - it was hardly the first “career” to come
to mind. Since I also had had a number of severe injuries as a young
person, much of my life had been focused on healthy lifestyle anyway. I
will admit that after the first two years of school I was ready to quit.
I kept expecting to learn how acupuncture works, which science cannot
fully explain, so we only learn how to use it. Now I wouldn’t want to
practice anything else.
·
Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less:
I’m a straight arrow. I shoot straight,
if from the hip. I fly straight. I aim to hit a target but I enjoy the
air and hope for the sky all the same.
·
Where are you from? How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?
I’m still a Newgan. It took a year for me
to stop being surprised when it rains. I moved here from Albuquerque,
which is where I lived longer than anywhere else. My business has been
running for 27 months.
·
If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
This is kind of a tough question
just because “a wish” seems so fantasy like. For example, I don’t enjoy
movies much that require a lot of suspension of the believable. Firstly I
would hope that humans could learn to get along a lot better and treat
each other far more humanely than we are, or have done historically.
Secondly, to restore the earth, the health of it’s wilderness and
biodiversity. Thirdly, well, what’s left?? How ‘bout great sex every
time all the time?
·
What is the one thing you would most like us to know about yourself?
I am using my best knowledge to act
in your best interest toward your stated goals. That’s what you hire me
for; it’s one of my strengths in managing your case and addressing you as
a whole person.
·
If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it
be and why? My great grandmother,
who is completely unknown to me. It would be a mystery found, like some
archeology site.
·
What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
I really like to stay active and
get outdoors. I’ve heard fresh air and exercise are good for you. When I
go for a walk however, I don’t like for it to be filled with lots of
gabbery talk.
·
Are you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
I have a boyfriend, who hogs the kids and
pets department. I love cats & he’s got one of good disposition. I love
dogs too, just not that one. But the kids are truly great; he’s a very
lucky father.
·
What are you most proud of in your life?
Life is not necessarily very sweet or
easy. To emerge a conscientious and moral and loving person seems the
goal I am currently up holding.
·
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Who knows what the “maturing” of our
economy holds? It’s hard to speculate without speculating wildly.
·
How would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand?
How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country
grow, change or etc: I have always been in awe of this organization
and the work it takes on. I think the legislation to protect ones ability
to take responsibility and make your own choices is pretty critical.
·
What services do you offer?
Oriental Medicine covers much more than just acupuncture. For example I
compound custom herbal formulas for just about any kind of issue, mental
or physical concern.
·
What led you into this business and opening up your own place?
I have never actually opened my
‘own place’. I combine my business with other peoples because it is so
complimentary to just about anything. Why should I re-invent wheels?
·
Do you feel what you provide is holistic health care, alternative health
care, complimentary health
care services or do you care what it’s labeled?
What I provide is actually all three.
Oriental Medicine is
always taking into account the whole,
and I certainly look at the intersection of issues around any complaint in
my
approach. It is also most often used
as an “alternative” to allopathic approaches to pain syndromes, and
everything
from digestive to hormonal
complaints, weight loss, allergies, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, etc,
etc. But
moreover, it is “complementary” and
CAN be used in addition to virtually every other approach but especially
nutrition
and physical therapy.
·
How do you get into this field?
You go to graduate school for 4 years.
Then you sit for national and state
exams, pay a bunch of money for
a license, and voila – live happily ever after.
·
What advice do you have for people looking to get into this field?
Look for another field without such
an
expensive education and
overhead that doesn’t require so much public education.
·
What is the most remarkable thing you’ve seen in your business? There
are many many remarkable stories when it comes to acupuncture. One that
was very instructive to me was a man in his late 70’s, brought by family
members for his vision loss. He had a 40-year history of diabetes, recent
back surgery, and literally 12 different prescription medications and was
quite unhappy with his current life stage as a widower. The vision loss
disrupted central and more refined detail such as that that allows you to
recognize a persons facial features. Because of his general health I
prepared him for a full course of acupuncture before really expecting
results. However, when I was helping him up after his first session, he
says, “I can see your face!!”
·
What is your most proud accomplishment thus far with your business?
It is terribly fascinating to me
that my love of acupuncture would put me so squarely in the business
world. If I can’t keep my doors open and my license current, I can’t help
anyone. Before this I never understood the costs of business or how
commerce affects us all. I am proud of my business relationships and to
be part of the Chattanooga community.
·
What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your
services that you feel they don’t?
People seem to underestimate the cost of
poor health. They really do. They ignore (or take some kind of weird
pride in) their suffering & the life or productivity it costs them. They
discount how much money and time they spend on a day-to-day basis trying
to accommodate their debilitated day or assuage their personal
limitations. The effect on their weight, mood, motivation or ability to
have happiness and satisfying relationships – is in fact, extremely
expensive. One can usually get money back (especially if you have good
health) but you can never get yesterday back. I don’t think this is a
dress rehearsal, with or without that headache or fatigue, or bad knee.
Most people will spend more money on the appearance of their hair than
they will on resolving a health issue. It is incomprehensible really – I
guess a result of a society that emphasizes how you look over how you
are. The value that the average person gets from acupuncture – in terms
of recovery, stress release, and pain relief, is almost immeasurable it is
so impactful. But somehow we have lost our ability to value this bodily
experience and care more about having 80 channels on the TV. It’s my
customers call though, not mine. I’m just here to serve those who want
the service.
·
What are 5 things you think the public needs to know about holistic health
but doesn’t?
See “Top Myths…”
accompanying this.
|
|
Top Acupuncture Myths, by Terry Jeanne, MSOM,
L Ac
Myth #1 NEEDLES
Unfortunately when many people
think of “needles” we viscerally recall our experiences of needle-headed
syringes either injecting drugs or withdrawing body fluid. Fortunately,
this has absolutely nothing to do with acupuncture. In fact,
acupuncture needles have a completely different design, are super thin and
insert without harming skin. The only medicine they “contain” is the
ability to stimulate your body’s inherent healing capacity. Subsequently
the placement of acupuncture needles is typically painless and actually
relaxing. Lastly, there are also non-needle or needle-free techniques
that can be used.
Myth #2 PAINFUL
CONDITIONS
Acupuncture is most well known
for its ability to treat many types of pain. The frequently dramatic
results, with headaches, shingles, or joint injuries, seem to have
contributed to misunderstanding that less than dramatic changes are
somehow not effective. But acupuncture is an ideal way to compliment
overall health. Many people continue care even after their initial
complaints resolve. Moreover, conditions not associated with much pain,
(and some not helped by usual approaches) can also be effected through
Oriental Medicine. Digestive difficulty, infertility, macular
degeneration, asthma, irritability, and even the common cold, are
examples.
MYTH #3 RELIGION
Professionally trained
acupuncturists are never required to subscribe to any particular religious
views. Early cultures,
whether Eastern or Western, made little effort to separate science from
predominant religions. Since Oriental Medicine
has been recorded for at least 25 centuries, early materials reflect views
of the times in which they were written of course. Acupuncturists utilize
the incredibly sophisticated organizing principles of your body, not
religion, to effect healing.
MYTH #4 “BELIEF”
Belief in acupuncture or
Oriental medicine is not necessary to experience improvements. Likewise
the effects are not a distraction or “placebo.” Animal patients, by way
of example, are treated effectively with acupuncture. On the other hand,
the effects can be so dramatic that it actually is hard to accept
something so simple, as stimulating such profound spontaneous change in
your body.
MYTH #5 NO
“SCIENTIFIC BASIS”
Just because it seems very strange
that stimulating a point on the shin is correlated with immediate release
of a frozen shoulder, for example, this does not mean it is
impossible (or even improbable for that matter). MRI’s and other modern
studies demonstrate aspects of the clinical observations of centuries of
use of acupuncture.
MYTH #6 UNREGULATED
Many states have taken steps to recognize
the highly specialized training of acupuncturists and offer means to
licensure so that the public may benefit. A licensed acupuncturist
typically has had hundreds of hours of supervised clinical training and
thousands of classroom hours, as well as board exams, and other costly
criteria. You should feel free to ask your practitioner about their
training or experience, including the use of traditional herbal medicine
formulas.
Myth #7 FOR
THE ELITE OR VEGETARIANS
While acupuncture is great to combat stress
and is used for cosmetic enhancement, it is also very effective for a wide
range of significant health challenges. Acupuncture will work just as
well on you as it does on celebrities and professional athletes.
Excellent Oriental medical care does not require extreme diets. It is
very complimentary to mainstream Western allopathic medicine and numerous
other therapies.
MYTH #8 A
MAGIC WAND
Some people will have a health problem
treated once and never have that problem again - but this is not very
common with any type of medicine. Oriental medicine works with a
multi-faceted, complex, healing mechanism generally known as you!
While the precise biological mechanisms are not completely understood,
acupuncture is not some Hollywood trick and may take time and
dedication to be fully utilized. There are, in essence, no rules about
your capacity for healing. Thus the success rate at which your individual
health response may well occur is unique to you.
Terry
Jeanne, MSOM,
is a licensed
professional acupuncturist and herbalist, involved in the Chattanooga community. She
encourages you to consult with her even if you have
“tried”
acupuncture
before. In-office initial
consult is no charge to you.

It sometimes seems like I’ve spent my entire life in the
kitchen. Growing up in Michigan, we had the traditional American diet –
pot roast & vegetables, baked chicken, apple dumplings, home-made soups,
canning vegetables from the back yard garden, etc. A Sicilian neighbor
taught me about old-country Italian cooking and a Hungarian family shared
their unique cuisine. Doug’s mother taught me about Southern cooking, and
after moving to Virginia, I learned Southern seaside cuisine.
My professional cooking “career” began in Michigan with 7-years of
running the hot lunch program for a private Lutheran school. Later, I
taught cooking classes for an adult education program in Virginia Beach.
My latest “gig” in the Knoxville area involves small group cooking classes
featuring demonstration and student participation. Iron Chef and Rachel
Ray – look out! I’m nearly ready for Prime Time.
Not only do I love to cook, I love to eat! It was a shock to learn
several years ago that my cholesterol levels were dangerously high. At
first, I was sure I’d starve to death long before the cholesterol got me
with the medically recommended diet. After working with several health
care professionals, I modified my favorite recipes to fit my new
heart-healthy diet, and published many of them in my “DELICIOUSLY WICKED,
YET GUILT-FREE” cookbook. I’d love to share this with you– it’s only $10 +
$3 shipping & handling for your autographed copy.
I’m living proof that my more Holistic approach to
Reducing High Cholesterol does work! Even with the odds being medically
against me genetically & being over the age of 50 I have successfully
lowered my cholesterol with diet & moderate exercise.
Doug & I recently discovered SUNRIDER, a 400 item product line,
founded on KNOWLEDGE, EXPERTISE & INTEGRITY, formulated & developed
by: Dr Tei-Fu Chen, Pharmacist & Master Herbalist & Dr Oi-Lin Chen, a
Licensed Medical Doctor. These foods, beverages & concentrates are based
on Ancient Chinese Herbal Formulas. We are thrilled with the
results and would love to share these will you also!

INCREASING PRACTITIONER'S BOTTOM LINE!
My aim is to help CHEO members reach more clients. By using our NON-Profit
organization for leverage to receive more discounted rates at Health
Conventions we can all be very successful. This year more CHEO members are
being able to afford booths then ever. It looks like Allexian village may
partner with CHEO as well on some events. CHEO members will be able to
receive discounted rates at the Alive Expo in Atlanta in May too.
Be on the list of people who want to participate in companies healthy
clinic if you want to take part. Contact me at
maryalicecrapo@comcast.net. Be my
eyes and ears. If you hear of any event even 1 day in advance, please
contact me immediately. This will get me on the list for their next event.
My second goal is to help CHEO members get to know each other. I want to
encourage each practitioner or member who would like to participate to
have an event at their office or home. It can be a simple open house, or a
network meeting where other CHEO members bring their modalities of healing
if they want. In this way each of us can refer to each other once we get
to know each other and learn what services are provided. It is building
relationships so when someone asks where they go for such and such, we can
more freely recommend each other.
For 25 years, I deprogrammed all ages, even
an 80-year-old medical doctor, out of extremist cults.
I wrote
“Twisted Scriptures: Breaking Free From Churches that Abuse”. This book
enables parents and friends to debrief their own loved ones out of
controlling groups. This book has enabled 1,000’s to free themselves from
destructive movements. Now my services are no longer needed since my
entire program is in a book. The book has replaced me!
I also have the passion to alleviate physical suffering and help enable
people to heal themselves. My deepest concern is how to cut costs down for
getting well and staying well. I know many cheap remedies that I share
with the poorest of the poor.
I quit being my own chemist. For many years, I picked and chose my
supplementation. I am through with all that. I found one shake that gives
the cells everything I need with the right balance. I know it is all
getting absorbed because on this perfect nutrition, in the first month
aches and pain disappeared, my energy soared and health issues
disappeared.
When Tami Freedman told me her dog was not eating or drinking, I dropped
some of this Powerful-Powder for her dog. Tami mixed it and with a syringe
fed her dog. In several days he came back to life. I was confident we
would see results even though her dog is old with many severe health
issues.
I ask people to put all their nutrition aside for 60 days. Takes 2 shakes
a day and you will feel the difference & see health issues begin to
disappear even if you had them for years. Many get on the product just to
prove me wrong. My up-line, a retired airline pilot, had been taking well
known MLM’s vitamins. In 4 days pain & stiffness went away in his hand. He
gave away his old vitamins and never looked back.
I have learned mushrooms or juice products don’t give the cells everything
they need to rebuild perfect healthy cells and I was spending a ton of
money on them. *My nutritional drink nourishes, restores, detoxes,
fortifies and vitalizes so I don’t need anything else.*
The science behind this shake is impressive. A microbiologist, Dr.
Theodore Dr. Kalogris. Kalogris was one of the many scientist sent to
Africa to solve a terrible crisis years ago. Bovine were infected with a
disease and that if not stopped could destroy the cow population. Dr.
Kalogris was the only scientist who believed that a nutritional formula
could stop the disease. So he set out to create a nutritional formula that
could be absorbed by every cell in a cow and in a therapeutic dose
so that every cell would become healthy. He did. It worked. No more
diseased cows. When he returned to the US he thought if he can do this for
cows, he can do this humans.
Over the next 10 years Dr. Kalogris changed his formula 800 times trying
to put every piece of nutrition in a can that could be completely absorbed
by the body. Each time Dr. Kalogris would analyze his hair to see if all
the nutrition in his powder was absorbed into his body. Twenty years ago,
the people that took this powder and made it into a drink, saw remarkable
results and the same happens today. If you are a diabetic, there is a new
powder you can add to your shake. This powder reduces blood sugar about
30% and the side affect is loosing about 5 pounds in the first week.. One
of my friends was giving herself 8 insulin shots a day and now she only
needs one shot a day. Call this recorded message to learn more:
712-432-1284.
You can listen to about 100 people a day give their testimonies on 25 live
calls every day across this country. Call and I will plug you in
(423)413-9343. Come to our meeting any Tuesday at 7:30 PM or Saturday at
9:30 AM at the Best Western. (on Shallowford & Lee Highway) You will hear
amazing testimonies from our local people as well. This stuff really works
and it is a great way to earn money.

Univera Lifesciences: world class science based & clinically proven nutritional
beverages that help you boost your energy, lose weight, feel younger. Free lunch
seminar with Dr. Jeff Johnson, Mondays 12:00 noon, Lake Side Tavern in
Knoxville, TN.
|
|
Q & A with Craig:
1. What
brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved
with?
I was
introduced to Univera 3 years ago by our Cardiologist friend Dr.
Jeff Johnson from UT hospital. He recommended the Aloe Gold drink for my
then 7-year-old son Brady who has had gastric reflux since he was 5 and
had been on Previcid daily since then. The Aloe Gold supplement allowed
my son to get off his prescription medication and after 6 months he was
symptom free. Once I saw how this had helped my son I decided to pursue
Univera further and visited their headquarters in Lacey WA, met
their core leadership team and decided to become an associate to represent
them in TN.
2.
Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less:
I have a
passion to help bring healing, hope and financial freedom to others. I
have been with Univera Lifesciences for just over two years. I was
born in New York City and grew up near Saratoga Springs NY. I have lived
in Knoxville for the last 13 years and have two children Brady 10, Alexa 7
and have been married to my wife Ellen for 13 wonderful years. I play
tennis and guitar for fun.
3. If
you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
Globally Personally
1.
Jesus Christ to Return 1. Financial
Freedom – Reach Blue Diamond
2.
World Peace 2. Time Freedom
– to spend with family
3. End
to sickness and pain
3. Have a job that effects the lives of millions
4. What is the one thing
you would most like us to know about yourself?
That I see
life on earth as a miracle and our time on the earth as the most precious
resource we have.
I live my life with energy and passion and see every day as a new
adventure.
5. If
you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be
and why?
Jesus
Christ – He has done more to effect how the world is than any other
person and is also part of the trinity – so it would be pretty awesome to
meet your maker before you are dead.
6. What
are you most proud of in your life?
I am most
proud when I can help someone else become healed from something that has
been hurting them. Changing the lives of others for the better brings the
most satisfaction and pride in my life.
7. How would you like to
see your organization grow, change or expand? How would you like to see
medical and alternative health in this country grow, change or etc.
I am
currently seeking qualified Chiropracters, Massage Therapists, Fitness
Trainers and Nutritionists in the Knoxville and Chattanooga area to
consider carrying Univera products in their offices. Univera
is a science based company that grows all ingredients on pesticide free
soil in its farms, generates the formulas in its Genomics labs using DNA
level research on it world class Medicinal Plant Library and conducts 3rd
party human clinical trials. Orders are taken online at
www.univera.com so there is little
inventory investment. All products come with a 90 day risk free trial
period. White papers and physician website at
www.univerascience.com
I would like
to see all family doctors begin using holistic nutrition as a mainstream
form of prevention. I would like to see the government begin to provide
individual financial support to those who can not afford nutritional
supplements in the same manner as they support prescription drugs. I
would like to see people take control of their health instead of just
letting their health control them – by being proactive and becoming
educated on how the body ages and what can be done to slow that process.
It is a shame that most Americans will die by age 77 when the body has the
ability to live with vitality & purpose until 100. I hope that the
holistic movement that CHEO is part of will be part of this change in
attitude.
8.
What services do you offer?
Univera
Lifesciences offers nutritional supplements with four basic
categories.
NOURISH
– Feed the cell by providing nutrients as the building blocks of
health to ensure peak
mental and physical performance.
RESTORE
– Focus on maintenance, prevention, and rejuvenation of the cell to help
prevent
degeneration and help maintain strong performance.
FORTIFY
– Guard against oxidative stress and toxins to support the body’s defenses
for a
strong immune system.
VITALIZE
– Provide support for the vital metabolism of nutrients at the cellular
level for
energy production.
9. What is your most
proud accomplishment thus far with your business?
That I have
been able to share it with over 400 people in a short period of time and
have seen people that could not lose weight before – lose it in a health
way, that people who were scheduled to receive joint replacement surgery
were able to cancel it, that people who could not sleep without medication
now sleep restfully without it, that children who went to school with no
breakfast now have a health meal every day provided by Univera’s
serve first program.
10. What is
the one thing you want the public to understand about your services
that you feel they don’t?
If the public
continues to live their lives the way their parents and most Americans do
they will have the same results. I want them to realize that they have a
choice in how the story ends and that Univera can help change the
way they experience the aging process. That there is good proven science
behind the development of Univera’s supplements and that there is
absolutely no risk is trying them! There is no downside to trying
Univera and they will look, feel and perform better. Basically that
they can have a tremendous influence on how they age and that only 35% is
because of genetics and that leaves 65% up to our personal choices.

What
brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product
you’re involved with?
Over a year ago, I
lost my health and was having trouble walking. I had become the poster
child for the SAD (Standard American Diet), stress, lack of exercise and
rest! After five specialists and many thousands of $’s, the prognosis was
a regimen of serious drugs, 2 surgeries, and an apnea machine to sleep!
The bad part about all this is that I KNEW BETTER. So we prayed
for answers, and then learned of the miraculous properties of ionized,
alkaline water…6 months into this technology ALONE, I can walk and
oftentimes RUN, take NO drugs whatsoever, will never have to use this
apnea machine again, nor will need the surgeries! Now this water machine
is no panacea, but I’ve seen firsthand that regaining that delicate
alkaline/acid balance in your system is critical to good health. Use of
this machine has allowed me to do that.
Tell us
about yourself
I’ve been a real
estate broker/owner in Chattanooga; I have a BS in Bus and numerous real
estate designations; formerly hosted an international radio show (2 hour,
3ABN) where I got to interview experts in their field(s); active in
church and civic forums, AND am 30+ years married to my best friend. We
have one daughter and 2 grandsons.
What is
the most remarkable thing you’ve seen in your business?
While managing a
local real estate office, I learned that one of my agents was dying of
cancer; she had no family in the area, had earlier gone thru a radical
mastectomy, chemo and radiation. Initially she had responded to those
treatments. By the time she moved to Chattanooga and to our office, her
health was deteriorating. Within weeks, she was assigned to hospice and
told she’d be dead within months; she literally fell apart one morning,
and shared all this with me. My heart went out to her! We prayed for
guidance; John and I contacted folks we knew in the health and nutrition
field. We decided to implement all we knew, and do it together! John got
some twin screw juicers; videos of Dr. Lorraine Day’s detailing her
journey through cancer and healing. We studied Dr. George Malkmus’s
Hallelujah Acres protocols…THEN we ALL began to juice veggies and fruits,
organic whenever possible. There’s more to the program, but to make a
long story shorter, 2 ½ years later Shirly was one of the top agents in my
office!
The more successful
she became, the harder she worked and the emphasis on nutrition and
exercise took a back seat. Her dream was to become a managing broker, and
so she studied and passed all the tests required. She inspired /
encouraged us to open our own brokerage, and Shirly was to manage it.
After months of bureaucratic papershuffling between TN and GA, I was
finally licensed to operate as a real estate brokerage in TN and GA. The
good news came to us late on a Friday afternoon; then early the following
Sunday morning, Shirly died. I realized she had gone back to the SAD diet
(Standard American); the cancer had returned, this time with a vengeance.
What did we learn
from all this? After my grief of losing a dear friend, I began to look at
the ‘larger’ picture. 1) It’s CLEAR that diet, exercise and lifestyle
play a huge role in health! WELL DUH….2) We learned that doctors, no
matter how ‘well meaning’, don’t often KNOW and are rarely trained in
nutrition / holistic medicine. 3) I learned that FAITH and HOPE also
play a vital role in health and wellness! 4) And this is a biggie: We
learned that, as babies, our systems are alkaline and up to 90% water!!
As we age, our bodies become more and more acid; ‘acidosis’ sets the stage
for all SORTS of diseases and conditions. An adult is ~70% water, and an
elderly person is 50%…and by the time we die, our bodies are so dehydrated
and SO ACID the worms won’t eat your eyeballs for weeks until that acid
dissipates! More info than you needed here???
J
So It’s
NOT Rocket Science After All….
I also realized all
these ‘successful’ health protocols …like Dr. Lorraine Day’s juicing
regimen or Dr. George Malkmus’s Hallelujah Acres diet, or Dr. Robert
Young’s program (the pH Balance) or Dr. Theodore Rubin’s (The Maker’s
Diet) or the holistic program at Weimar Institute, Dr Don Colbert’s 7
Pillars of Health, etc etc …they ALL have one thing in common..they ALL
help to get your body back into an alkaline state!
Did you know that
cancer can’t live in an oxygenated, alkaline environment?? I had a real
problem with Candida…did you know that yeast can’t live in an alkaline
environment?? I could go on and on, but you get the picture.
Since I’m 70% water,
I’m attacking 70% of my problems with this ionizing water machine!
Now the machine doesn’t heal a thing…but this huge load of
antioxidants in the water run right out of this machine flushes toxins out
of my system, and ALLOWS MY BODY TO HEAL ITSELF. I’m living proof that it
works…AND, when I see that I’m beginning to get more acid, I’ll up my
water intake and lean towards more alkaline foods (whole foods whole,
fresh, organic if possible).
What are 5
things you think the public needs to know about
holistic health, but doesn’t?
The critical thing is
that each must become his/her OWN patient advocate! For years, I’ve
searched for a doctor that incorporates holistic healing along with
standard medical protocol; the ‘best of both’ is the REAL definition of
complementary medicine, and is the greatest blessing. In an emergency,
you’re mighty glad to have that ER doctor/surgeon/anesthesiologist
available! Yet a good holistic practitioner/naturopath can help you
prevent sickness and disease, the ravages of aging, etc.
What is your most proud accomplishment thus far with your business?
Watching people take
responsibility for their own health, then watching them get WELL is the
greatest high you can imagine!
What is
the one thing you want the public to understand about your services
that you feel they don’t?
Many people will
believe whatever a doctor tells them, and often they’ll believe it right
to their grave. I am NOT a health practitioner, but I have learned that
GOD made our bodies with the ability to heal themselves, if given the
right environment and nutrients!
I’ve since done
extensive research on water, and am convinced that most of us are drinking
a toxic cocktail: the pharmaceuticals in our water supply (not normally
being tested for), the chemicals and pollutants that are at ‘acceptable’
levels in public water supplies; the addition of chlorine and
fluoride…both TOXINS…that are added to our water supply…is it any wonder
we’re surrounded with a myriad of diseases and unhealthy people?!
This machine is the
latest technology in the ionization of water. Because it cleans itself
WHILE you’re using it, the electrodes don’t ‘gunk up’, giving this machine
an expected life of 15-20 years! The cost is about half what the older
technology runs….and its much lighter. The electrode plates are mesh
titanium, and the pH and ORP output of this machine matches or exceeds
others on the market! Kind of a ‘no brainer’ to me…HA!
You can learn much
more about the operation on my website at
www.IonwaysPro.com/JoWater When you go to that website, you can also
hear doctors testimonials, and you can see an independent testing lab
which compared the top 7 machines on the market…ours came out on top
everytime.
So how
much is your health worth to you??

|
Q & A with Paula:
What
brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved
with?
I was interested in
working in the Wholistic Health field. I began to study about the immune
system and discovered that over 60% of it was in the gut. Feeling that was
really significant, I thought the gut was the first place to think about
health-wise.
Tell us
about yourself in 60 words or less
I
am a transplant from PA, but have lived in Knoxville TN for over 30 yrs. I
have mostly been in business for myself from cleaning houses to painting
houses, and also hairstyling. I have 2 daughters and a son, ages
21,22,26. I love to dance and frequently do line dancing and country
western couples dancing
as my preferred exercise program.
If you had
three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
1-
I wish human beings would love one another and respect the animal
kingdom.
2-
I wish people would live and let live.
3-
I wish alternative health issues were on public and private school
curriculums,
starting in kindergarten.
What is the
one thing you would most like us to know about yourself?
How much I enjoy helping others to feel at ease.
If you
could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and
why?
I would enjoy having lunch with one of the ancient masters of Eckankar
because of the divine wisdom they impart.
What do you
like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
Dance, watch movies, read, sew, cooking, surf the net, go to the farmer’s market,
hunt for bargains, have meals with friends, talk on phone to friends,
listen
to self improvement CD’s and seminars, not necessarily in that order.
Are you
married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
Was married once for 26yrs., divorced for 9yrs. 3cats, 3 kids.
If you’re
not in alternative health full time, what kind of work do you do?
I have a network mkt. business in Waiora. The premier product is Natural
Cellular Defense, a liquid zeolite product designed to pull heavy metals
and other toxins out of the body very quickly. After all, I am in the
detox business.
What are
you most proud of in your life?
My children, my independence.
Where do
you see yourself in five years?
I see myself wherever spirit leads me, and that’s liable to be a
surprise.
How would
you like to see this organization grow, change or expand? How would you
like to see medical and alternative health in this country grow, change or
etc.
I would like to see CHEO expand to a lot of other cities in TN and
surrounding states, forming a network and drawing out more wholistic types
of practitioners who in turn may influence doctors to join and be open to
different ways of healing. Insurance coverage of wholistic modalities
affordable to all, and the right to choose.
So tell me about how you got started in your work?
I started in my home. Four years later I was invited to join the
staff at "Well By Nature" in Knoxville. I plan on opening a business with
a friend in the near future.
How would you
describe your studio to someone?
One room with a table to lie on, a colon hydrotherapy instrument on the
wall, sink, shower and quiet music.
What services do
you offer?
Colon hydrotherapy, ionic foot bath, nutritional counseling,
detoxification counseling.
What are 4 things
you think the public needs to know about holistic health but doesn’t?
1-
Alternative care is more preventive. In other words it is designed
to
keep you well.
2-
Alternative care is not used as a diagnostic tool.
3- There
is no rule against a person choosing their own practitioner.
4- There
is insurance available for some wholistic care, but not all.
What do you think
the publics’ perception about holistic health is?
In TN, many do not know of the existence of wholistic health modalities,
especially colon hydrotherapy.
How do you get into this field?
There are quite a few colon hydrotherapy schools in this country. I would
suggest
a love of helping people, delving into ways of detoxification, and
studying the immune system.
What is the most remarkable thing you’ve seen in your
business? Inspirational story
One day a woman came to me for a colonic (short term for colon
hydrotherapy) and she was very ill looking—tired, pale, dark circles under
eyes, not very alert, depressed. After her colonic, all those symptoms
were gone and she was smiling. There was a remarkable change! She was a
different person than when she came in and there was a glow about her.
What is your most proud accomplishment thus far with
your business?
That
I am able to help so many feel so much better so quickly.
What is the
one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you
feel they don’t?
That this way of detoxification is so important to the proper functioning
of the organs, prevention of disease, and helping to achieve a goal of
emptying the body waste a normal 1-3 times a day.

Lynne Higgins,
a brief history and commentary
I was born and grew up in the Los Angeles
area. In 1975, I moved to Chattanooga with my late husband, one daughter,
a dog, a cat, 4 kittens and 37 houseplants. We had his motorcycle shop
and my needlework shop in East Ridge.
Ten years later, the world changed –
needlework, and especially knitting, went into a cyclic decline and I
decided to close my shop. VHS was just appearing on the scene and it
seemed like the perfect medium for teaching processes like the needle arts
and machine knitting.
Slightly modifying my machine knitting
curriculum for the camera, I embarked on an adventure, that at times read
like the “Perils of Pauline,” learning to use a word processor and to
produce a series of five instructional videos and workbooks for my machine
knitting lessons. I then traveled around the country teaching and
presenting the lesson series at workshops, conventions, trade and consumer
shows in conjunction with a national design competition featuring my
specialty decorative techniques.
My world changed abruptly on December 26,
1996 when I fell and broke both wrists while teaching my neighbor girl to
roller blade. Needless to say, “give me a break” is no longer in my
vocabulary.
In 2000 I was diagnosed with osteoporosis
and began research into causes, prevention and treatment for osteoporosis
that continues today. The side effects of conventional treatment –
synthetic hormones and prescription bisphosphonates like Fosamax – were
more frightening to me than the prospect of “ghost bones.” Along the way,
the bank and I acquired a portable x-ray machine specifically for
osteoporosis screening, and I earned a medical x-ray technologist
certification and license with the state of Tennessee. I learned about
the factors that lead to osteoporosis and about the ways in which diet,
supplements and lifestyle affect bone density. And, I discovered that,
using “the naturals,” it was indeed possible to increase bone density as
much as one standard deviation in a year!
My screening service has evolved from just
taking good pictures to include evaluations for risk factors, diet and
lifestyle and a consultation to develop a personalized plan-of-action to
build and maintain healthy bones without drugs for my clients. All
screenings & consultations are by appointment and may be scheduled at
Nutrition World in Chattanooga (423-892-4085) or Abundant Living in
Cleveland (423-614-7885) and by calling me at 706-891-6868.
I am delighted to be a participating member of CHEO and share their
mission of providing alternative and complementary health information to
the public. I firmly believe that the greatest gift one can give is
education and information to empower people to make informed decisions
about their most important asset – their health. It was my privilege to
serve as editor of the 2006 directory, and this year to work on
membership, advertising sales and design for the 2008 Chattanooga and
Knoxville directories.
As of this writing, the print directory for Chattanooga practitioners and
supporting members has gone to press, however you can still join and be
listed (with your ad) in the CHEO web directory (www.4cheo.org).
Update: The membership & directory committee finished the first
edition of the print and on-line directories for the greater Knoxville
area and is working on the Chattanooga 2010 directory. Contact Lynne Higgins 706-891-6868

Carringer, Q & A
for CHEO Spotlight August 2008
1.
Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less:
I am a
ND, MH, Nutritionist, Homeopath, and Iridologist. I also do EDS
testing which works with the acupuncture meridian points on the
body to check the pathways for energy flow through the body which
can reveal lowered vitality or a hyper state (inflammation). It
also can suggest supplements that would help bring you back into
balance and have well-being.
2. What brought you into the Alternative Health Field you’re
involved with?
I was
40 years old, just became a Grandmother, ready for a complete
change in my life and new career where I could truly help people
and improve their quality of life. I followed my heart and
started working at a Health Food Store, then on to a Natural
Healing Clinic, then 2 more Health Food Stores, one of which I
managed, and now Abundant Living that my husband David and I,
along with our partners, Dr. David & Jan Darden, own.
3.
Where are you from? How long in the greater Chattanooga area?
Prescott, AZ, the state most known to seek natural health methods
and healing, and also known for seeking the least medical
treatments. I have been living in Cleveland for 7 ½ years, and we
opened Abundant Living 3 years ago in May.
4. What is the one thing you
would most like us to know about yourself?
It is
my heart’s desire to teach and reach as many people as I can to
help them achieve true health and have quality of life so they can
enjoy it. My position is to educate someone interested in just
that. I have so much energy and quality of life myself and I want
to pass on that it was all done by an organic plant based diet,
supplementation, cleansings, exercise and a healthy living
program. It is my calling to share this with anyone who may also
desire what I have in my life!
5. What is the one thing you
want the public to understand about your services
that you feel they don’t?
How
important it is to provide the body with the proper fuel for good
health. When you put the wrong type of fuel in your vehicle it
doesn’t operate well either and it will not run correctly until
you put the right fuel back in it. You HAVE to consume good,
clean organic foods and supplement with greens, probiotics, EFA’s
and enzymes everyday due to the poor sub-standard food chain in
America. If we still grew our own organic vegetable garden like
everyone did 100 years ago and before that time and had lean,
grass-fed free-range meat to eat, and clean waters for fishing all
this would not be necessary to maintain health to remain disease
free.
America feasts on white flour, white sugar, unclean meat, soda,
and fast food. Garbage in, garbage out! Our environment and air
is also very polluted, we have to compensate in every way we can
due to all the toxins in our food, air and water. We have to seek
out better quality choices to receive quality health. I cannot
stress it enough that whatever you put into your body will be in
direct proportion to your health. The 2nd most important thing it
to say, that cleansing the body of toxins, chemicals and waste
will also greatly improve your health and give you energy as the
body doesn’t have to deal with the load of toxins and the garbage
dump site it had before you cleansed.
(Toxins out, nutrients in!) It
truly works!
6. In 10 years holistic health
will be___________
In 10
years holistic health will be far more progressed and more widely
recognized as it was for the last 6000 years before the Rx drug
scene happened about 100 years ago and then exploded about 50
years ago. Herbs, supplements and plant based foods and products
have always proven true for health. I believe many people will
follow the trend that is in effect right now and get back to their
ancestors teachings that are safe, non-toxic and
non-invasive.
Holistic health is about the whole individual, not just treating a
disease. It takes into consideration the person’s lifestyle,
spiritual condition, emotional state, physical condition and
diet. It looks at the person’s complete situation. We have moved
forward with the latest state of the art testing equipment, and
very innovative products and food supplements. Holistic health
brings a person back into homestasis (balance) and when you are in
balance everything is working for you in your body and healing
begins with the inner intelligence that our loving Creator put
into each one of us when given the proper environment.
7. If you had 3 wishes, what
would they be in order of importance?
First, I wish for a new health care system that would actually
work as opposed to our severe sick care system that only maintains
sickness and doesn’t promote health or nutrition.
Second, I wish for our
M.D.’s to be required to take nutrition courses and learn about
the safe use of herbs, supplements, and herbs to treat the body in
place of harmful drugs that kill over 700,000 people a year.
Furthermore: I wish that Naturopathy, and many other natural
health and healing methods would not be illegal in most states and
all N.D.’s could practice freely and openly to help and heal our
very sick nation.
Third, I wish for all
foods to be free of harmful additives such as: chemicals,
steroids, hormones, antibiotics, dyes, preservatives, white sugar,
white flour, ect… and get us back to pure whole clean food and
mostly all organic like 100 years ago, and if this nation would
eat that way again perhaps we wouldn’t need all the medical
attention and we wouldn’t have the obesity and sickness as we do
now. Therefore we would go back to being number #1 in health
again like we were 100 years ago, instead of being number #47
which is where we are now!
8. What is the most remarkable
thing you have seen in your business?
Inspirational story?
When
customers come back to tell us how the nutritional supplements,
proper diet, clean water, and organic food has turned their health
around and they are very thankful that they tried the natural
approach. Also stories of people following an organic, whole food
diet and losing 50 lbs in 6 months! Another testimony of people
drinking almost a gallon of purified, alkaline, hexagonal, water
per day and cleaning up their diet and losing over 60 lbs!
Still
other testimonies of several customers telling us how their
eczema cleared up and digestion improved when adding probiotics
back into the gut to keep yeast in check, as antibiotics strip you
of the friendly bacteria (probiotics) and then yeast over grows
and many health issues rise, one of them being eczema. An
estimated 95% of American’s have a yeast overgrowth.
9. What do you do in your spare
time? What do you do for fun?
In my
spare time I thoroughly enjoy cooking fine, tasty, wonderful,
organic meals and putting the love and the thought into what makes
them everything they come to be. It is so rewarding to use my
kitchen and put my heart and love into the food and then
thoroughly enjoy it!!! For fun I like to listen to contemporary
and smooth jazz, watch Tyler Perry movies and films about Madea,
and also go to the beach, which I absolutely love and plan to live
on a coast line somewhere warm all the time in the future!
10. What led you into this
business and opening up your own place?
The
Lord came into my heart 10 years ago and changed my entire life
around. He put this ministry in my heart, therefore He provided
me with a place to carry out His will and calling for my life!!!
Yours in health,
Diana Carringer, ND MH Nutritionist, Homeopath, Iridologist

Q&
A:• What
brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re
involved with?
When I was a child, I used to
go to the chiropractor with my mother. My dad used apple cider
vinegar for many health benefits and encouraged taking
multi-vitamins. Also the concept of a balanced meal was ingrained
since childhood. I had some allergic responses to medications while
I was working on my undergraduate degree. I sought out alternatives.
They worked and didn’t cause problems. I considered chiropractic as
several friends became chiropractors, but when I met several
acupuncturists, tried it with impressive success, read The Web That
Has No Weaver by Ted Kaptchuk (an acupuncture textbook), I was
convinced acupuncture was the route for me. I trained in NAET (Nambudripad’s
Allergy Elimination Technique) in 1996 after I saw impressive
progress with patients who travelled to North Carolina for that
treatment and encouraged me to learn. With my own allergy history, I
saw remarkable changes with NAET and have continued to offer it as
part of my practice.
• Where are you from?
How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?
I am a native Chattanoogan. I went
away for college and some years after. I always knew I wanted to
return to the Chattanooga area. I practiced acupuncture briefly in
the Boston area with world renowned acupuncturists / authors Stephen
Birch and Junko Ida after graduating from New England School of
Acupuncture. I moved back for good in 1994 to help care for my dad
who was ill. That’s when I opened Acupuncture Center.
I rented space within the facility of Tennessee Institute of Healing
Arts, in East Ridge and then Brainerd, until 2000 when I moved into
the current home of Acupuncture Center at 6212 Dayton Boulevard,
Suite B, Hixson, TN. In May 2008, I opened a second location of
Acupuncture Center at 517 Russell Street, Suite C, Dunlap, TN. The
second office is a dream of mine since childhood. My dad did
business in the Dunlap area. I always loved to go there with him.
I’ve wanted to live and work in Dunlap since childhood.
• If you had three
wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
1. World peace.
2. End starvation.
3. Endless wishes, thoughtfully and thoroughly
considered of course.
• If you could have
lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
Jesus Christ…to attempt to fathom
the scope of His purpose and presence more meaningfully.
• What do you like to do
in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
What spare time? I love my work and
put long hours in. It takes regular continuing education and
research to keep up. I love to cook for and feed friends and family.
I love to help my husband with farm work when I can. He’s a very
smart man, a true inspiration to me. I treasure any spare time with
him.
• How would you describe
your studio to someone?
Acupuncture Center is a
professional, successful, clean and comfortable clinic providing
Japanese and Chinese Acupuncture, Cosmetic Acupuncture, Enzyme
Nutrition, and NAET in a pleasant caring manner. We also offer
Therapeutic Massage, Meridian Stress Assessment, and Custom Foot
Support.
• What led you into this
business and opening up your own place?
A desire to provide successful
treatment modalities to those in need. My independent nature and
strong work ethic inspired my confidence in opening my own practice.
The support and understanding of my family helped sustain me.
• What do you think the
publics’ perception about holistic health is?
I have seen several viewpoints. One
uses holistic health care as a first resort for health issues as
they arise. Another uses it as a last resort after other options
have been exhausted and the health problem is either unresolved or
worse. Some of this group would never have thought they’d end up
seeking my services. Still another uses holistic methods of health
care as a regular part of daily life focusing on preventive health
care and health maintenance.
• What is the most
remarkable thing you’ve seen in your business?
I’ve seen the joy and appreciation
for eliminating a forty year pain in only one treatment that’s
continued to stay gone eight years and counting.
• What is your most
proud accomplishment thus far with your business?
Grandmother always cautioned
about pride. I am happy
to have built, continue to maintain, and grow a great full time
acupuncture and enzyme nutrition practice since 1993.

Aveliza
Mercado,
LAc, DiplAc, MSOM Q & A:
I am Aveliza Mercado, "Liza" for
short. I was born and raised in Chattanooga. My name comes from
a mixture of Avelino and Elizabeth, the names of my parents. They
are from the Philippines.
I attended GPS and graduated from
Boyd-Buchanan High School. My B.S. degree in Fashion
Merchandising is from Tennessee Technological University in
Cookeville, TN. Leave it to me to study Fashion at a University
known for its Engineering program! I thought I wanted to be a
designer, stylist or buyer, but after a few years of trying, I
lost that lovin' feeling for the Fashion industry.
I spent a few years doing reception
/ administrative work for Dr.'s offices where I took an interest
in the Healthcare industry. There was always an underlying
influence since both of my parents are Doctors, but the interest
did not surface until later.
I knew that medical school or
nursing school wasn't for me, so I enrolled at Tennessee Institute
of Healing Arts and earned a Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy
diploma and certification. I ended up teaching Neuromuscular
Therapy for a few years and had a massage practice at TIHA.
During this time I met a few local acupuncturists including Jill
Kelly. I developed an interest in Oriental Medicine and its
theory of treating the whole. It made sense and I was inspired!
My intuition told me that TIHA was
not
the end-all for me, so I began looking at acupuncture schools.
Jill helped me create my short list of schools to research. I got
accepted to the oldest and most established school in the U.S. I
was honored, but a lot of obstacles revealed themselves as I was
trying to move to Boston (think extremely high rent), so I had to
decline two weeks before school began. I decided and was luckily
accepted to attend Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, New
Mexico. I arrived in Santa Fe with 2 weeks worth of clothing and
my kitty cats the weekend before school began and I still had not
seen the school! My parents followed shortly after with my stuff.
It could've been a disaster but it ended up being the best choice
for me. Lesson One: trust your intuition.
I thrived, learned a lot, made
fantastic friends and worked in the coolest bookstore known to
mankind (The Ark Bookstore)!! Upon graduating from SWAC in 2006, I
was advised by a friend to contact Jill. I did and found out that
she was ready to add an associate to her practice at the
Acupuncture Center in Hixson. My intuition told me to go back
home, and so did an astrologer!!
So here I am, at the Acupuncture
Center, working with Jill Kelly. I am blessed to
be back in my hometown and to be working with Jill who has already
taught me so much. The welcome back from Chattanooga has been
wonderful and I have had many great experiences so far.
Acupuncture Center offers acupuncture and other services including:
massage therapy, Meridian Stress Assessment, Loomis Digestive
Enzymes, NAET and custom foot support. I have begun my training in
Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET) and earned my
Diploma as a Loomis Digestive Health Specialist from the Loomis
Institute in Madison, WI. I have also trained in cosmetic
acupuncture for the face and the abdomen.
I want the community to know that I
look forward to working with the patients that
I am destined to treat. I think it's beneficial to know that as
acupuncturists, we probably have been trained differently and we
treat differently. We each have our own vibe. The key is to choose
the one that fits your needs and comfort level.
My goal is to make a positive difference
in the quality of life for everyone who participates with me and to
provide extraordinary healthcare in a safe place where patients can
be in an atmosphere
of acceptance and support.

Jill Kelly Q & A (continued)
• What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your
services that you feel
they don’t?
Enzyme Nutrition is a vital
component to health. With aging, stress, surgery, it becomes harder
for the body to maintain production of all the enzymes necessary to
do the vast work of digesting foods, delivering the nutrients from
the foods we eat to the right tissues, absorbing the nutrients once
delivered, assimilating them once absorbed, and removing the waste
accumulation at each step of this process.
Enzymes do the work. Vitamins and
minerals do not have the capacity to do work without the appropriate
enzyme connecting and doing the work for that specific nutrient.
Enzymes do two things--they digest food and they are your immune
system.
Enzymes occur naturally in
foods but they are depleted by cooking and processing. Research has
shown that man-made foods (pretzels, donuts, etc.) and canned
preserved meats (tuna, baby food, etc.) have depleted the enzyme
values to the point that 30 minutes after eating these foods white
blood cell counts in the body increased from high to toxic levels.
Eating the best food choices is great. However, if certain enzyme
producing systems in your body are exhausted, are you digesting
those great foods? That’s a huge key to benefiting chronic
degenerative diseases and optimal health.

Charles West:

Where are you from? How long in Tennessee?
I grew up just North of Atlanta. I came to Knoxville in 1966 to attend
UT and graduated a few years later with a BS in Music Education. I
realized in my Junior year that I did not really want to be a Band
Director or teach kids. Although I had some interest in adult education,
I got distracted and managed the UT Music Hall for a year, worked at the
University Center mostly as the audiovisual specialist, then owned a
bowling, billiards & darts specialty sporting goods store which included
a sports bar for a while. I got into massage in 1994.
What brought you to Alternative Health and the
field/product you're involved with?
The
quick answer is "I got into massage by accident." That's also the long
answer. In 1992, I fell off a ladder and broke both my heels.
Fortunately, they were only simple breaks, not serious enough to require
surgery. Unfortunately, it was still 3 months in a wheel chair with
casts up to my knees. Afterwards I quickly worked through crutches and
walking cane, but my feet and legs were usually sore and achy. A
Chiropractic Assistant I knew offered to massage my feet and legs.
Curiosity turned to serious interest. In 1993, I got a chair massage
from Steve Citty at a health fair and knew that I wanted to do that.
After training in 1993-94, I took the entrance exam the American Massage
Therapy Association (AMTA) required at that time and was admitted to
AMTA. I also joined the Tennessee Massage Therapy Association, a
non-related state organization.
Initially, I only wanted to do chair massage on employees at work. In
real-world Tennessee at that time, massage at work was still not
generally accepted. I looked around for other opportunities to
supplement the limited chair work. In 1995, I heard of an opening at
Halls Chiropractic, and I've been a part-time, contract therapist since
that time. Over the years I've also worked in several fitness centers. A
few years ago, Steve Citty and I joined with Kathaleen Moriarty King to
rent a suite in West Knoxville under the Massage Associates banner while
still also working independently. Kathaleen and I are still there (we're
looking for another therapist to fill an empty room). My room is large
enough for teaching small classes.
In 2002, I began studying Touch for Health® Kinesiology at the US
Kinesiology Training Institute (USKTI) in Chapel Hill, NC, and became a
Touch for Health® Kinesiology Association Certified
Instructor/Practitioner in 2003. I'm still the only one in Tennessee. My
BS is in Education and this brought me back to teaching. I continued
training at USKTI in the Professional Kinesiology Practitioner program
which Dr. Bruce Dewe had developed in New Zealand. This summer, I'll go
through an International College of Professional Kinesiology Practice
Instructor Training Workshop in Canada. I look forward to offering the
new K-Power® workshops this fall. Kinesiology basically uses muscle
testing as a biofeedback mechanism from the body along with various
techniques to balance the body structurally and energetically. It
incorporates Western physiology, Chinese meridian work, and other reflex
and energy techniques.
To better understand the meridian system and get more into acupressure
and Asian modalities, I did a month-long, 200-hour Acupressure intensive
in 2006 at the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley, CA. It was a fun month
with classes almost every day. Since then I've been playing with the
mix, exploring the recipes, and using kinesiology to assess and balance.
For me, Taoism and Quantum Physics agree that we are fundamentally
energy, and we can work with that vibrational energy at different
levels. My bodywork now includes rubbing the muscles and working with
the underlying vibrational energy.
Many of the things I've learned are easily understood and usable by
anyone, and I enjoy teaching them to people. One of the key ideas of
Touch for Health is that "You are your primary health care provider."
All healing is self-healing. There are no healers, only facilitators,
which is how I view myself. Showing people how to improve and enhance
their own health and well-being has become a key part of my work.
What services do you offer?
My
bodywork includes acupressure, kinesiology, the MyoKinesthetic System™
and Myoskeletal Alignment Technique®.
I incorporate amma, shiatsu, tuina, and jin shin styles of acupressure,
as well as, sound, color, essential oils (aromatherapy) and other
techniques to assess and balance the body (muscles, meridians, chakras,
etc.). I use muscle testing (kinesiology) either actively or passively
on every client. Various neuromuscular techniques, some osteopathic, are
also used to balance structure. I teach workshops. Some are open to
anyone and some are for Massage Therapist continuing education.
What are 5 things you think the public needs to know about holistic
health but doesn't?
You
are your primary health care provider. Your doctor is not. You make the
primary, day-to-day choices which effect your health and well-being.
Your body and your mind are not separate. You are bodymind.
Structure affects function affects attitude affects mood affects
behavior affects physiology affects structure....
How would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand? How
would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country
grow, change or etc.
Of course, I'd like to see more CHEO
chapters around the country. I'd like to see people take more
responsibility for their own health. I'd like to see fewer rules and
regulations from government and insurance companies, more freedom to
choose any primary physician, even an acupuncturist, Doctor of Oriental
Medicine, Naturopath, Homeopath or chiropractor. I hope that the
Osteopathic Physicans which will soon begin coming out of Lincoln
Memorial University's DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine will have a
significant positive influence toward holistic health care in Tennessee.
If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would
it be and why?
I'd want to sit down with my parents again. There's always more to say
that didn't get said.
What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
I like walking, reading, watching
science fiction TV & films, tai chi, surfing the net, and learning more,
especially about bodywork, which is fascinating. I like keeping up with
politics - I've been a member of the Libertarian Party since 1976 and
ran for Congress in 1988. We have gone to DragonCon in Atlanta over
Labor Day weekend for several years. It's a science fiction & fantasy
convention which is up to about 30,000 people now - about half in
costume most of the time. I carry my camera for the amazing costumes -
some extremely accurate & detailed, some very creative, some hilarious.
Are you married, have you ever been
married, etc.? Kids? Pets?
Diane and I have been married for
over 25 years. I could see us growing old together. We decided on the
Monday before Thanksgiving in 1982, made discreet plans, got married
that Friday, then called everyone to come to the "reception" at the bar
and bowling pro shop that I owned and operated inside a bowling alley.
Our daughter, Anna, has graduated from college with a degree in Japanese
Language and Culture which included a year at a Japanese university. She
speaks and writes Japanese which has inspired me to learn Chinese. I'm
having fun doing that, even if at a casual, slow & irregular pace. Three
cats let us live with them.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five or fifty, I see myself doing bodywork and showing others how to
do bodywork. I like what I do and, while I look forward to more
flexibility, I intend to keep learning and doing till the end. I just
had my halfway to 120 party, so there's a lot of fun years left.

Q & A with Laurie:
● What brought you to Alternative Health and
the field/product you're
involved with?
When my oldest son, now
27 years old, was born he was allergic to most foods and all
prescriptions. I had to learn how to care for my son and keep him
healthy through herbs.
In 1999, I adopted our
youngest son, now 15 years old. He was, at the age of 7, failure to
thrive, severely malnourished and was taking Prozac, Depakote,
singular, Ritalin, and other prescriptions when I adopted him. He is
now off of all prescriptions, is at normal weight and has grown
tremendously.
In 2002, I was given
one-year to live and through nutrition I reversed my health and now
I am helping others. I am always searching and researching products
and supplements that can help others and me, the more natural the
product the more I am likely to promote the product.
● Tell us about yourself in
60 words or less:
My strengths are: I am
reliable, a true listener, a true friend, very organized and truly
love mankind. I want to be able to help everyone. My weakness is
that I can be a perfectionist at times and that compels me to
stumble.
● Where are you from?
I am from a town
called Baldwinsville, NY, which is approximately 20 minutes from
Syracuse, NY. I was born and raised there. In 1994, I moved to
Albuquerque, New Mexico and was surrounded by essential oils and
holistic health. In 2000, I moved back to my home town.
● How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?
I have been in the
Chattanooga area since July 2007.
● If you had three
wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
If I had three wishes,
my first wish would be all my family members be saved and have a
great relationship with God; second wish: that my whole family,
including myself, would have great health and the third wish: that
we, the people of United States, would have the right to what type
of health care we want to pursue and not to have problems with our
government, exammple: FDA attacks on alternative care, vaccine-free
children, etc.
● What do you like to
do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy
reading and doing crafts, mostly plastic canvas. I love to cook and
bake.
● What do you do for
fun?
For fun I enjoy camping
and hiking with my family and with friends just having a good time
together.
● Are you married,
have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
I am married to
wonderful man name Bill. We got married four days after 9/11 on
September 15, 2001. Between the two of us we have five children,
Charles, 27 years old; Jennifer, 26 years old; Jason, 25 years old;
Ashlee, 18 years old and Bradley, 15 years old. We also have two
grandsons, Macon, 3 yr; and Charles, 15 mos.
I love animals and right
now we have two dogs, a miniature black lab, named Ivy; a
Chihuahua/terrier mix, named Patches, a Russian Blue cat, named Amy
and a Bearded Dragon, named Nala.
● What are you most
proud of in your life?
There are a couple of
things that I am really proud of: my children and being able to
obtain my higher education and being able to start my own business
and to love my career.
● Where do you see
yourself in five years?
In five years I want to
have obtained my Naturopathic Doctor degree and have a wellness
center. I see in the center, chiropractors, acupuncture, massage,
work-out room, nutritional counseling, raindrop therapy, lecture,
retreats and more.
● How would you
describe your studio to someone?
My office is very
relaxing, warm, homey feeling and welcoming. With the different
essential oils being used, it always smells good. The office is
originally a solarium with a lot of plants, natural light, hot tub,
massage table and a couch. When we have group events we have a lot
of fun and laughter.
● What services
do you offer?
I offer one-on-one
counseling with my clients on wellness/health issues. As a Holistic
Health Practitioner, I am your personal advocate for living an
energized and passionate life. Whatever your concerns are, my job is
to help you find which foods and lifestyle choices work best for the
life you desire.
A true holistic
approach to life incorporates things that nourish you other than
food, including things like honest and open relationships, a
spiritual practice you feel connected to, a career that inspires
you, and physical activity that
makes you want to move and feed your soul
and your hunger for living.
I offer Raindrop
Technique which combines the science of aroma Technique with the
techniques of Vita flex, in the application of essential oils, which
are applied on various areas of the body to bring structural and
electrical alignment. It is designed to bring balance to the body
with its relaxing, mild application. It will also help to align and
clear the energy centers of the body without using force or
excessive pressure. When you combine the electrical frequency and
the intelligence of the body and the oil, a greater healing process
begins.
I also offer ionic detox
foot baths, I teach skin care, I give lectures on various
wellness/health issues and I write nutritional articles monthly for
a local magazine company.
● What is the one
thing you want the public to understand about your services that you
feel they don't?
My philosophy is that
alternative health care should be afforded by everyone.
I have discounts for CHEO members, senior citizens and for those
that are financially burdened I work with them on a payment plan or
reduce fee basis. True "health care" will keep you away from having
to spend money on "sick care". It is a lot cheaper to stay healthy
and to mask your illness with prescriptions and sick time from work
and activities.

Q & A with Susan:
What brought you to
Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved with?
Throughout my life
I have been faced with various illnesses, or family illnesses that
have not been successfully treated solely by the medical profession.
In many instances the illnesses or conditions could have been
treated through preventative means and in most cases alternative
therapies would have been far more beneficial as a preventative
measure.
I personally have
developed many allergies after a chemical exposure some 18 years
ago. Medical science could only detect and confirm the exposure but
could not treat the condition. Frankly, they didn't know what to do
at that time to heal the damage other than treat the symptoms and
further additional unneeded side-effects. Consequently, foods have
become one of the main allergens, therefore, seeking pure foods that
are not contaminated is of vital concern and should be a concern to
us all. Added sulfates for shelf-life including altered gmo foods,
drinks, even make-ups that contain genetically modified ingredients
and chemicals will slowly break down our immune systems leaving us
open for additional illness we all would do well to avoid.
Tell us about yourself in 60
words or less:
Being a Human
Service Specialist, I care for the interests of society and seek to
advocate and promote what would be beneficial for all humanity and
human interests.
My interests
are in various areas concerning rebuilding what is currently lost in
our diets, the air we breath, our water, products and strive to
promote physical wellness as well as environmental awareness to all
peoples through the purest resource options available. I am
incorporating links in my website to provide easily researched
products and services to those who feel the same. My goal is to
develop a natural newsletter in the near future.
Grapevine Review -
Natural LifeStyles:
www.grapevinereview.com
Where are you from? How
long in the Greater Chattanooga area?
I was born in
Ohio, but raised part of my life in Florida. I have lived in the
Chattanooga area for about 18 years where I chose to raise my
children. They say hindsite is sometimes better than foresite. I am
very pleased with outcome of raising my children here. The area has
added great insight and provided a well-rounded view for
child-rearing.
If you had three
wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
First,
I would love to see "universal peace" for all mankind, including
natural harmony between the earth, animals and environment.
Second,
it would have to be "motivation" of all peoples to bring the earth
back to it's natural preserve so the harmony of the peace could
continue on a renewed earth free of contamination.
Third, would
have to be for all to have genuine, "love and appreciation" for the
existence of earthly treasures, peoples and all living matters
promoting a continual bond between the co-existence and acceptance
of what life can offer each living organism in giving back to where
the need prevails.
What is the one thing
you would most like us to know about you?
My intentions in working with the
advertising for Cheo are geared toward getting to know each an every
member, what their specialties are and how their services can better
others lifestyles. I have an advertising background and hope to
better serve the members through the knowledge I obtain and my
travels throughout the community. I would hope to become a good
referral source for each and every one within the alternative health
organization.
If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who
would it be and why?
Currently, it would have to be
Gregg Braden. I find his vast travels and ability to empathize with
humanity astounding. He has an ability to spiritually relate to
those around himself but is in total touch with his inner person and
can relate his thoughts and relevance to the world through the art
of communication. I appreciate his humility and grace for humanity
and all humankind. I have posted his videos and links on my website
for reference and inspirational/positive thought.
What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
My spare time is centered around my
home and small herb garden. I enjoy bread-making and creating new
ideas. When I go out of the home I like to combine my time, when
the weather allows, with my appreciation of the Art World. I enjoy
art walks and appreciate the talents of those who invest their time
in creativity and creation. This is where my love of wine and the
finer pleasures in the purity of good foods can be measured and
appreciated. I hope to take a world cruise to further grasp the
vast cultures and practices that stimulate our co-existence.
Are you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?
I am single now. Having raised
three children, I seem to have a new found contentment of where I am
at in the stream of time. I have been a foster parent, supervised
foreign exchange students from Germany and had a small business
assisting disabled Veterans as a human service contribution. One
might say, I have been married to care-giving.
Animals are amazing and my life has
been full of pets of every various degree. Life has toned down a
little now and I am finding more time to appreciate the simple
things around me and the God-given pleasures that are so profound.
German Shepherds have always been my favorite breed of dogs, but I
find animals that find their way to my home will always have a meal
and eventually a good home.
If you’re not in alternative health full time, what kind of work do
you do?
All my life as far back as I can
remember, health awareness and issues regarding the environment seem
to have been a preference and influenced my life.
I became
a medical assistance in my younger years and later graduated as a
human service specialist. For about two years I spent working
part-time with a newspaper as an advertising sales manager and
sold/wrote ads for a newspaper in 1985 while living in Florida.
I have found many health problems and allergies can be related to
the area or environment where one was raised or lived for a period of
years, so the world's conditions interest me greatly. I hope to
travel and widen my perspectives of the nature of things in relation
to our environments. I hope to always seek solutions and
assist in promoting new and alternative therapies or products for
the publics knowledge to promote future wellness in our changing
times.
CHEO offers some of the most
natural, chemical free and healthy options and services available.
Currently I will be working with CHEO to promote advertising and
awareness of these natural services, products and therapies .
This is a wonderful opportunity to
get to know each and every member, their specialties share this
vital information with other members seeking relief as well as the
public seeking direction with an alternative approach in a
contaminated world.
I am looking forward to the coming
new year and talking with you soon!
What are you most
proud of in your life?
I would have to say, my children.
Each one has blossomed to become their own individual self. They are
level- headed, goal-oriented and successfully finding their own way
and places in society. Although, I am not a grandmother yet, I am
assured that the day will come and they too will know the time is
right. I am thankful my children have put their priorities in order
and seek to practice awareness in the world around them.
Aside from my own children, I enjoy
making a difference when I see a need and have the ability to make
things better.
Where do you
see yourself in five years?
This is hard to determine with the
worlds state of affairs. I would hope and pray, healthy and happy.
How would you like
to see this organization grow, change or expand? How would you like
to see medical and alternative health in this country grow, change
or etc.
Personally I would like to see more
of the public have the opportunity to experience and see the
benefits of what natural health, healing and alternative approaches
can do for them personally. There are so many wonderful services
and products that can benefit each and every person in a natural
healthful way. The options available for restoring ones health
safely without damaging chemicals are available as a preventative
measure contributes to the natural approach.
I strongly believe awareness is
essential to the knowledge of what the natural world offers vs. the
conventional approach that most have perceived as a learned
practice. We need to work together to support our rights of "choice"
as a natural approach. I am truly concerned with the attacks from
pharmaceutical companies and movements to eliminate alternative
medicine. Medical practices in Europe strive to promote the natural
approach as a preventative.
We should all have the option to choose our health care and
preventive practices are only the beginning. I would hope to see the
medical professionals working together with alternative health
professionals to prevent disease and prolong life as the ideal
solution in bettering health measures for all. It would be wonderful
if they both could work together with the best interest of the
humanity. I would hope that one day this could happen.

● Tell us about yourself:
From the time I was 10 years old,
I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I have always loved the great
outdoors, water, movement, dance, animals and people. Helping
people to improve their lives has always been important to me. In
addition to teaching, Health and Physical Education for 30 years, I
also coached a variety of sports and after school activities
including interscholastic volleyball and basketball teams,
cheerleading, intramural sports and dance clubs. I am now in my
second career as a Natural Wellness and Lifestyle Consultant. I
have owned my own home based business for the past 19 years
exclusively using the Sunrider International product line. I can’t
think of anything that I would rather do. Like teaching, I am still
able to make a difference in peoples’ lives. I also teach Water
Aerobics 3 mornings a week during the summer at the community where
I live.
● What
brought you to Alternative Health and
the field/product you’re involved with?
Looking back to my childhood, I
think my Mom was the first person to make me aware of natural and
healthy ways of doing things. She was self taught and an avid
reader. Mom would implement things into our household that she had
learned from reading Adele Davis and Linus Pauling.
I really didn’t “get it” though
until much later in my life. After teaching for several years, I
took graduate classes in Nutrition from Dr. Susan Marcus. She is
the one who truly opened my eyes to alternative and complementary
health and making nutritional and lifestyle changes. Dr. Marcus was
the one who first introduced me to Sunrider, a world leader in
herbal nutritional and regenerative whole food concentrates. That
was 19 years ago and it has been a wonderful journey and life
changing experience ever since.
● What
led you to your business and opening your home office?
When I experienced the superior
quality, powerful concentration and safety of the Sunrider foods,
skin care, personal care and household products, and what it did for
my health and wealth, I knew I couldn’t keep it a secret. Since I
decided to share these incredible products with others, I have
achieved a level of financial freedom that I never thought possible
and it keeps getting better. The income potential is unlimited and
so are the wonderful health benefits. I don’t think I would have
decided to do this if I hadn’t attained the results I did. I love
the fact that one company has over 400 products that they
manufacture with care and integrity that can meet almost all of my
needs. I am so passionate about these products that I would share
them with everyone even if I didn’t make a cent. The good news is
that the marketing plan is as good as the products. Distributors
are able to enjoy a plan that pays out 58.5% of company Sales Volume
with eleven different ways to make money. Those who don’t want or
need the financial freedom aspect of the marketing plan can still
join and enjoy the health benefits and up to a 40% discount off the
retail price of the products.
● What
services do you offer?
I offer a variety of services most
of them free of charge. I do Nutritional Analysis, Lifestyle
Consulting, Skin Care and Cosmetic Classes, Personal Consultations,
Group Presentations, Business Trainings, Financial Freedom Seminars
and Health Education Seminars. Popular topics for my Health
Education seminars include “Understanding and Improving Digestion”,
“Heart Health”, “Hormone Health”, “Regeneration and Acid/Alkaline
Balance”, “Achieving a Healthy Lifestyle”, “How to Read a Label”,
“Building Health with Whole Food Concentrates”, “Weight Management
the Healthy Way”, etc. I help people learn what they can do to
achieve optimum health, increase their energy, support their body
systems for improved digestion, immunity, heart health, hormonal
balance, respiratory function, emotional balance, blood sugar
balance, food sensitivity and allergy relief, joint support, acid
alkaline balance, weight management, mental clarity, beautiful
youthful skin and improved performance and the competitive edge in
sports and fitness activities. In addition, I offer Low Level
Laser Therapy sessions. This is a therapeutic cold laser that is
particularly helpful with pain management, improving circulation and
wound healing and assisting in improved function of the nervous
system, plus much more.
● If
you could have lunch with any person, who would it be and why?
I would choose to have lunch with
Dr. Tei Fu Chen, master herbalist, biochemist, pharmacist and
agriculturalist, founder of Sunrider International and manufacturer
of the best foods on the planet. He is truly a visionary and a
dreamer with a mission to bring health and wealth to the world. I
believe he is light years ahead of the rest of the industry. He has
given us a health care system based on the philosophy of
regeneration. The philosophy of regeneration is the exact opposite
of the sick care system and the philosophy of substitution that we
see prevalent in the world today. The philosophy of regeneration
says that our body will always strive for harmony and balance and
heal itself if it has the right tools. The tools are the right
combination of whole foods. We must all take some responsibility
for our own health. This made total sense to me from the moment I
heard it and that is what has led me to the path I am following.
● What is it
that you would like people to understand about your business or
company that you feel they don’t know?
I would like people to know that
the Sunrider regenerative herbal nutritionals are delicious
concentrated food grade herbs, very easy to digest with live enzymes
still in tact. Sunrider never uses medicinal herbs that force the
body and may have contraindications with medicines. Sunrider does
ongoing research and development and manufactures all of their own
products to pharmaceutical standards. Sunrider has a pharmaceutical
license, but they do not manufacture pharmaceuticals. I have had
the privilege of touring the Sunrider manufacturing plants in both
the US and China to see this amazing process first hand. Sunrider
has developed a way to filter out heavy metals from raw materials.
Sunrider’s herbs are free of pesticides, herbicides and chemicals
and are sterilized without fumigation or irradiation. They go
through an elaborate cleaning process and pass USDA inspection
before they are ever shipped to the United States. Nothing is ever
sprayed. There are no additives, preservatives or chemicals in the
foods. The basic Sunrider formulas have been tested on people for
over 3,000 years. Sunrider founder, Dr. Tei Fu Chen is in
possession of ancient Chinese manuscripts where the formulas were
meticulous recorded by Chinese physicians. Dr. Chen has added
modern technology and concentrated the herbs so that they are more
powerful than ever. These formulas are exclusive to Sunrider. No
one else has these special regenerative FOODS that Nourish, Balance
and Cleanse the body for optimum health. These foods are for
EVERYONE –tiny babies, toddlers, youth, teenagers, adults, pregnant
moms, athletes, couch potatoes, active people, the elderly, those
with health challenges, those with optimum health and even pets of
all kinds.
●
Where are you from? How long
in the Greater Knoxville area?
I was born and raised in Chicago.
I taught and coached in the elementary and junior high schools of
two Chicago suburbs, namely Thornton and Park Ridge, for my entire
public school teaching career. We relocated to Eastern Tennessee
seven years ago. We are blessed to live on Tellico Lake in a
wonderful community in Vonore where we built our dream home.
●
What do you like to do in your spare time?
What do you do for fun?
I have so many interests and of
course, not enough time to do them all as often as I would like.
Since I love mountains and water, I thoroughly enjoy downhill
skiing, scuba diving and snorkeling, swimming, water aerobics, and
boating and hiking. I also love to dance especially International
and American Folk Dance and Ballroom Dance. Yoga, Tai Chi, bicycle
riding and gardening are also part of my activities. I love to
travel and have been blessed with wonderful opportunities to
experience first hand many cultures of the world. Last summer we
had the privilege of experiencing a two week, all expenses paid,
reward trip to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong to
celebrate Sunrider’s 25th anniversary. This month we will be off to
Hawaii for a Sunrider leadership reward trip. What a fun way to mix
business with pleasure.
● Are
you married, have you ever been married? Kids? Pets?
I am married to my wonderful
husband, Phil, with whom I share my life, dreams and many common
interests. We have been married for almost 14 years. This is my
second marriage. I lost my first husband to cancer. We certainly
never know what life has in store for us, but I have been blessed
with two wonderful marriages. That seems like a miracle in today’s
world where so many people never really find happiness with the
right person.
I don’t have any children of my
own unless you can count the thousands of students that I taught and
coached through the years. I do, however, collect step children
(total 5) and step grandchildren (total 9).
About four years ago, we added
Amigo to our family. He is a yellow lab mix that we rescued from
the local animal shelter and he will most likely be the first one to
greet you when you come to visit us at our home or office. We named
him Amigo because he is everybody’s friend.
●
How would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand?
How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this
country grow?
I see CHEO as an organization that
will make a definite difference in how we see Healthcare. Educating
the community and public is the way to invoke changes in a society.
CHEO is doing that and will increase their efforts to do even more
in the most beneficial way possible to get the message across to the
general public. Bridging the gap between traditional and
complementary medicine is critical. I am excited about Knoxville’s
new affiliation with CHEO Chattanooga. Our collaborative efforts
will accomplish even more wonderful things for complementary health
education. I envision a health care system that utilizes the best
of traditional and complementary medicine in the same facility. I
dream of doctors and practitioners getting paid for keeping people
well instead of getting paid to practice on the sick. This was the
ancient tradition for Chinese physicians. Let’s adopt it in our
country. I envision a healthy society that seldom needs to utilize
the existing healthcare system, pharmaceutical drugs or surgery.
This will happen when and if people accept responsibility for their
own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health by tapping into
their own internal pharmacy within the human body and regenerating
their body on a daily basis with optimum foods and healthy
lifestyles.
●
What do you think the public needs to know about holistic health,
but doesn’t?
The public needs to know that
holistic health is not snake oil or scams. They need to know that
optimum health and regeneration are possible without drugs and
surgery. They need to know that there are a variety of very safe,
effective and non invasive therapies and modalities that can help
without negative side effects.

How did you
get started in your work?
It’s interesting because I
actually got into this field because of Greenlife. I worked for the
original Riverview store before when they opened in 1999. I was a
strict vegan at the time and wanted to work in a health food store
that sold a lot of the specialty products that I consumed. I worked
with the company on and off over the years as I travelled and went
to school, but when I started working in the Supplement and Body
Care department I worked with a woman named Denise whose knowledge
of nutrition really inspired me to learn more so I enrolled in the
UTC Food and Nutrition program. This started me on the path to an
eventual internship with OHSU in Portland, OR and then national and
state certification as a Registered Dietitian. Although some see
this as a much more conventional route, I was always integrating
alternative medicines and nutritional therapies, as well as
specialties diets like vegetarianism, veganism and raw foods into my
research and projects.
After school I
began working on a project for an organic rice cake manufacturer in
The Netherlands. I worked in a test kitchen doing product
development and research. I was also moonlighting as a personal
dinner chef several nights out of the week, highlighting organic,
nutritious foods. I have always been intrigued by the culinary
aspect of nutrition because nutrition starts with a close, positive
relationship with the food. I spent several months in between jobs
travelling and working on organic farms in France and Spain to learn
the agricultural side of food and some different traditional
European cuisine. After returning to the states I was eager to work
in a setting that was food-based but would also incorporate more
nutrition counseling and community projects. I am excited to be
back with the company where I found my initial inspiration and offer
my services free to the public.
What do you
like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?
I have recently become an
avid swimmer, so I do that in the evenings after work several times
a week. Cooking has become a pleasant routine for my days off. I
have a very strong love for many different forms of music, and get
much enjoyment in finding new and interesting songs and artists.
Right now I’m very interested in a lot of music that comes from
India and Eastern Europe.
For
fun? I’m always up for new experiences and travel, and those close
to me are often doing whatever we can to make one another laugh.
Where are you
from? How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?
I was born in
Philadelphia, PA and lived in New Jersey the first years of my
life. My family likes to move around a lot so I lived up and down
the east coast while growing up. However, I have spent 14 total
years here in Chattanooga, always leaving and coming back!
What service
do you offer?
I offer complimentary consultations in
the Greenlife store that run approximately 1 hour, and include:
Health and Diet Analysis, Lifestyle Counseling, Recipes, Educational
literature, and a 1 on 1 store walk-through tailored to the
individual. I represent Greenlife at health fairs, and speaking
events.
I conduct
health-themed tours that fall under the following categories:
General, Diabetes, Gluten-Free and other food allergies,
Vegetarian/Vegan/Raw, Weight Loss, Label Reading, and Kids.
I also work on a large variety of projects throughout the store that
help to educate our customers on making more nutritious decisions.
Recently I have posted signs for some of my “Nutritionist’s Picks”,
and labeled the tested Gluten-Free products in our store.
Soon I will be conducting classes and
talks out of the store on a regular basis once we get a little more
settled in!
My office hours are Mon & Wed-Sat
10-7.
What advice
do you have for people looking to get into this field?
In my experiences, those
that create the greatest impact in this field (and thankfully this
field is full of them!!) are those that our driven by a passion for
healing and sharing knowledge. With that conviction and dedication
at the heart of your practice you should be able to overcome any
obstacles.
I also stress
paying attention to current research. There is a whole new wave of
researchers looking at complementary and alternative medicine
research, and it is important to stay on top of what the scientific
community is looking at and coming up with.
What is the
one thing you want the public to understand about your services that
you feel they don’t?
I am a free, educational
resource for the community. My counseling, touring, and speaking
services are all complimentary on behalf of Greenlife Grocery. I am
also open to questions concerning nutrition and health from anybody
and everybody via phone, email or in person.
If you could
have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and
why?
Alton Brown! Host
of the Food Network show Good Eats. He is a culinary & food science
know-it-all and I would love to pick his brain and have a few laughs
over a good meal. |
What brought
you to alternative health?
Fate. Destiny. The
Universe. God. My soul's yearning for truth and beauty. My wonderful
and loving partner, Pete Boubel. My dearest friends and mentors,
Mary Ann, Aliess, Jerome, as well as many friends and teachers along
the way.
Where are you from?
The Midwest. Born
and raised in NW Indiana. Spent some years in Chicago, where Pete
and I met and lived. Then on to southern California for a U turn,
and now here for the past almost 9 years.
If you had three wishes, what would they be, in order of importance?
Fully manifest
heaven on earth/world peace. That'd do it, I think. What else is
there?
If you could have lunch
with any person, living or deceased, who
would it be and why?
Christ. Talk about
an avid interest in healing...
Are you married?
Pete is my
sweetheart of nearly 12 years, and who knows how many lifetimes. We
have two cats, Selena 14, Jezebel 12, and our Daisy dog was a year
in September.
How would you like to see
medical and alternative health in this country grow and change?
I would like to
see the people take back their/our personal power in every aspect.
Herbs and food are the people's medicine, and these things are and
through out much of 'civilized' history have been controlled by the
ruling elite, effectively enslaving the 'masses'. It's so
controlled today by insurance, pharmaceuticals, the AMA, the FDA,
which are in my view largely financially motivated--Big Business...
Health is not big business, it is not industry. It is our birth
rite. So, yes, I am most definitely inspired to encourage people to
take back their personal power
instead of handing it over the the machinations of culture.
As our
friend Terence McKenna said, "Culture is not your friend." I'm
passionate about encouraging people to reclaim their personal
authority and to enjoy the simple spiritual existence in daily
living. This is revolutionary.
Tell us about yourself in
60 words or less/what is the one thing you'd most like us to know
about you/what do you like to do in your spare time?
I'm a singer, a
dreamer, an herb loving, spiritual growth seeking, laughing, loving,
forward thinking, open minded, open hearted, rose colored glasses
wearing, all natural, sustainable, fairly traded, biodynamically and
locally grown, bicycle rider.
I'm a sincere, ever learning and
sharing, herbal cordial and elixir drinking, salve and bath salt
making, flower essence taking, aromatherapy and feng shui and
astrology loving, procrastinating planner, dreamer,
writer, actor in this human drama we've dreamed up called life...
