Q & A with Patricia Zerman, MS, LPC
of Altanta / Chattanooga Center for Attitudinal Awareness

Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less:
I began searching for answers to my life when I was 17 and never stopped.  The catalysts of parental alcholism and emotional abandonment, murder and losing a sibling to AIDS inspired the foundation for the focus of my life's work.  I've learned that life presents challenges... our work is to have the courage and will power to walk them through.

Tell us how you got started in your work?  After my sister's murder I realized that living what I had studied took a great deal more courage than simply reading the books, listening to tapes or attending seminars.

How would you describe your business to someone?  A safe environment where people can learn to release emotional baggage, find their own identity and risk practicing the necessary skills to successfully stand on their own two feet!

What services do you offer?  One-on-one couseling and experienced-base classes. I am a therapist full time teaching classes and spending times with clients one-on-one.

What led you into this business and opening up your own place?  My apparent ability to support other people in finding answers to emotional blocks and the lack of my sister's self-worth, which I feel led to the situation which caused her death.  I wanted to support other's from getting into situations that can be avoided through learning to  love themselves, value themselves and to attain self-importance.

Do you feel what you provide is holistic health care, alternative health care, complimentary health care services or do you care what it’s labeled?  Complimentary Health Care.  When one is healthy emotionally, then tend to be healthier physically and are afflicted with less ailments and health issues.

What advice do you have for people looking to get into this field?
Follow your intution and do not ever give up!

What is your most proud accomplishment thus far with your business?  Writing my book, "Twelve Guaranteed Ways To Stay Miserable (Or Change)" and have it been so well received.

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
1)  That everyone muster the courage to love him/herself by standing up for who he/she is
     without fear.
2)  That people realize the only true enemy one ever has is the one seen in the mirror every day.  3)  That everyone realize the only true friend and everlasting companion one ever has is that
Invisible Spirit within, which only wants the best for each person on the planet.

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?
That I am extremely committed to making my own life work and therefore equally committed to supporting the genuine success of the lives of others.

If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why? Leonardo DiVinci... because he was extremely open to unlimited possibilities through what he invented and the creations he visualized through the countless drawings and writings left behind that were so far ahead of his time.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Watch movies, especially comedies. What do you do for fun?  Walk outside when the weather permits, relax, breathe in the fresh air and feel the sun on my face.

Are you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?  Never been married.  Dates many, many wonderful men for long periods of time.  Just never had the desire to put on a wedding band.  No children.  Pets - yes, cats (5)!  Which I never would have believed if someone would have told me years ago!

Where do you see yourself in five years? Living in Chattanooga with a scenic mountain-top view, supporting people in living happier more fulfilled lives.

How would you like to see CHEO grow, change or expand?  I would like to see more events that draw residents to participate and become more involved in the outcome of their lives.  Events that not only offer education but the necessary tools to put a higher quality of life into practice.

How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country grow, change or etc.  I would like to see people take back control of the government, not accepting or swallowing everything that is fed to us simply because it is delivered.  Which then will support more honest communication throughout the country with regard to medicine, alternative health options, expanded awareness, prevention and continued support in self-maintenance in all aspects of one's life.

What brought you to CHEO?  My friend Mary Ellen Cicganovic, who is a member, suggested I become involved with CHEO.  I have had a successful practice in the Atlanta area for over 15 years teaching people how to risk living, the "how tos" so to speak, that therapists and most of the self-help material tell us needs to be done.  Mary Ellen and I both want to see a Center, like the one in Atlanta expand to the Chattanooga area.

Where are you from? Originally, Sarasota, Florida.  How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?  I am presently still living in Marietta, GA and want to move to Chattanooga as soon as possible.  I am touched by the approachability and friendliness of the residents and Chattanooga's beautiful scenic surroundings.

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you feel they don’t?  That I am truly as genuine, supportive, giving and caring as I come across.  I say what I mean and I mean what I say.

Tim Russell, LMT

I am a manual therapist who enjoys helping people learn how to feel better.  I emphasize learning because I believe that once someone learns how to feel better, they can take the lesson with them wherever they go.  I like empowering folks to get the most out of life including the life they have within their own bodies.

I am originally from West Texas.  I grew up in middle Tennessee and graduated from Tennessee Tech University with a degree in Psychology.  I considered going to graduate school, but chose to take a break from the protected environment of academia to see where life’s adventures would take me while following my bliss.  Eighteen years later, God has blessed me with a wonderful wife, Patti, a comfortable home, and a fulfilling career that enables me to use the talents that I’ve been given to help people.  I actually look forward to going to work on Mondays!!

I love to travel and have been all over America and Canada studying with some of the top teachers/practitioners of manual therapy.  I usually stay a few more days after the seminar and my wife joins me for a tour of what that particular area of the country has to offer.  In my spare time, I work out in a number of ways by working out at the gym and playing disc golf.  I needed a hobby that was not related to my work.  Now whenever my wife and I travel, we take along a few of our favorite discs and play some of the local disc golf courses.

I have seen many remarkable things since I have been in business.  I had the opportunity to work with a two-year-old that had been diagnosed with failure to thrive.  She had been very sick and had no appetite.  After the first session, she ate a whole hamburger on the way home which was the most she had eaten in some time.  Today, she plays soccer, goes to school and challenges her parents like any normal seven year old.

The body was designed with a tremendous will to heal.  This way of working encourages the body to find its own path to recovery by interacting very gently with all the soft tissue systems of the body.  Normally, the folks who benefit from my work notice a change for the better within the first four sessions.  Otherwise, I encourage them to explore additional forms of therapy.

The services I offer include Biovalent Systems Manual Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Therapy, Somatoemotional Release, and Tai Ji (Tai Chi) instruction.  I am a staff member of the Center for Integrative Medicine, a holistic medical practice that offers a range of complementary and conventional services.  For further information and to make appointments to try my work, please call 423-643-1965.

Barbara Rose, RN working at "The Well" uses BrainGym® movement, subtle energy healing, imaginary & sound frequencies to assist people in discovering their personal best as it relates to health, well-being and self-expression. She also assists in setting up nutritional programs to meet individual wellness needs, believing that nutritional deficiencies are overlooked as a contributing factor in dis-ease and sadly off the mark in many wellness programs. She teaches others to be practitioners of Energy Therapies including Radiant Heart Usui Reiki workshops, while also offering private Brain Gym and Reiki sessions and consultations.  In the last 18 months Barbara became an Isagenix consultant, offering better options to meet the nutritional needs of the adults and children.  "The Well" also offers classes by other teachers. One of the newest class series is Feng Shui and Space Arrangement taught by Monica Castaneda, formerly of Ecuador. She has a natural, organic, grounded approach!

Q & A with Barbara Rose:

What brought you to Alternative Health field or to the products you’re involved with?

Working as a nurse in a traditional setting for 25 years propelled me into the wellness field. Despite an increase in technologies, early detection programs, and a myriad of new pharmaceuticals, the patients I worked with were not getting healthier. In fact over time new clients came in with more underlying conditions, the disease state seemed to progress faster, impacting more severely the quality of life and life-span. Cures were never discussed in patient/family conferences, just the diagnosis and treatment plan. Although I worked with a great team of patient advocates our scope of practice was limited in my opinion. Foundations sprung up to look for cures.

It was at an American Holistic Nurses conference I attended in the early 80’s that I first learned about the leading edge therapies that would greatly influence my role as a nurse. The topics that peaked my interest were: hypnotherapy, thought and guided imagery therapy, music and drumming for health, and energy healing. The conference inspired, awed, and blessed me hope- magnificent changes would change medicine and nursing.

Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less:

I am a passionate, warrior woman, not a “warring” one. The “True Warrior” archetype is a catalyst for change which is in harmony with all life. My belief is - everything living has an aspect of divine consciousness. My challenge is to “Walk the Talk, continue to be awed by the infinite possibilities, and embrace life as the true gift it is.

Where are you from? How long in this area?

I was born in Milwaukee, WI, where I lived for most of my life. In 1997 my husband, Richard, and daughter, Rose, and I moved to Grainger County, TN. We lived at Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center for 2 ½ years then moved to Knoxville where we live now!

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?

First, I see myself setting up educational programs, primarily for women and children in this country and abroad, to empower women as mentors for their circle of influence. I believe our world will change when the elders of wisdom speak again to everyone in the community.

Second, I see myself setting up health and wellness programs to educate the community on natural ways of farming, cooking, self-care methods of healing, and empowering practices, so people can live life to the fullest.

Third, I see myself working with others to create a true a Health-Care system for everybody. Our current system is a “sick-care” system!

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

I am an optimist! I see potentiality!

If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

I would love to spend a long leisurely lunch with Gandhi, a True Warrior! He did what others before him could not: he led am entire nation to freedom and gave the people hope. He saw no one as an enemy! I wish to learn how he was able to attract strong people into his peace movement. His followers were strong, courageous types who could fight, yet chose not to. The movement helped to change patterns of behavior- to act from a passion for life than fear!

What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?

I love to dance, perform and teach dancing! At age 24 I took my first dance class, adult ballet and I have not stopped dancing yet. International Folk Dancing is one of my favorite types. Lately I have taken an interest in Circle Modern Dance!

I also love foreign travel. It does not get any better than this: dance and travel trip!.

Are you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?

Richard and I have been married for 26 years and dated for 37 years. He makes decisions faster these days. He is my best friend, partner and knows me better than anyone!

Rose is our only child; she is an intelligent, honors student, and senior at Gibbs High.

As far as pets go we have had dogs until recently. Now, we are care for a stray tuxedo, male cat, my daughter named Ronny, after Harry Potter’s sidekick.

Tell us more about the work that you do?

I have my own wellness business called Rose Wellness and am an Independent Star Consultant with Isagenix International providing me with full time work and enjoyment!

What are you most proud of in your life?

I am proud to have taken the path before me, chose the forks that appealed to me, learned as much as I could from my history, and realized that every step led me to this very place, and it is perfect! I am a result of the choices I have made, and make, and the situations I have attracted into my life!

How would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand? How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country grow, change or etc.

I would like to see local chapters spring up throughout the area, then beyond. I see more corporation involvement – program sponsorships for wellness education; an active high quality speaker bureau to bring education to business; lunch ’n learns; mentoring opportunities for personal and professional growth….

Begin on # 3 of the plan.  I have started going to meetings sponsored by the TN Health Care Campaign; it is the first step in re-creating the health care system.

How would you describe your center to someone?

The Well of Wellness, formerly The Sheltered Well, is a place where one can imagine and explore possibilities. It has undergone a recent transformation. My husband, Richard, and daughter, Rose, joined me in this large home and work space. The upstairs now houses the family area and Richard’s home inspection business, while the large downstairs hosts The Well’s many healing activities, classes, and my office.

What has not changed is The Well’s theme of self-healing and empowerment: “Fill the Well Within from Streams of Possibilities.” Classes continue on weekends and evenings and private consultations are primarily scheduled during the day. I offer free use of various passive healing tools, including a Mesmer Battery (based on the work of German physician Franz Anton Mesmer), and Gentle Wind Project instruments.

Do you feel what you provide is holistic health care, alternative health care, complementary health care services or do you care what it’s labeled?

I call myself an Integrative Wellness Consultant. I embrace all of the labels mentioned but find I am fond of the terms “holistic” and “complimentary”. The words have meaning to me in the paradigm I operate from.  I do not believe the general public knows what we are referring to when those labels are used. To them it is new age but it is really an updated version of wellness based on new and ancient wisdom.

Five years ago holistic health was known to some folks, those living on the west, or east coasts, and in other progressive cities and states.  Currently holistic health is gaining recognition.   In 10 years holistic health will be a household phrase.

What advice do you have for people looking to get into this field?

Experiment with all types of modalities, learn more about those you are attracted to, and have benefited from, to evoke passion about your work and inspire others.

What is the most remarkable thing you’ve seen in your business?  Inspirational story:

(I have many stories but not many have heard this one.)  Two years ago on my flight back from India I noticed this man sitting across the aisle from me and two rows in front of me. As I looked at him he seemed to look paler, restless, and was sweating more than usual. Like me he probably just finished a large meal the airline fed us. (My friend and I enjoyed this delicious meal complements of Austrian Airlines!). I decided to use the restroom. A thought came to me, he may need some assistance.

As I opened the restroom door the flight attendant greeted me and told me I was needed. I immediately knew it was the man I noticed earlier. Now this large man was slumped over against the window and had labored breathing. The man’s wife and the flight attendant both pleaded with me to do something.

Yes, I said as I bent over to take a closer look. The first thought was, what we do if he arrested? It would be almost impossible to get him to the floor given the narrow aisle….He would be dead weight. Silently I asked for guidance, How can I be of assistance to this man that would serve the highest good for all involved? “Check his pulse!” was the instant, silent message. As a nurse, former CPR instructor, and trained Flight Nurse, I knew to check his pulse. At that moment I felt such gratitude for my training: acute and chronic dialysis, night shift nurse on the hospital code team, and the Air Force training.

I have to check his pulse, I said out loud! The man’s wife hurriedly moved out of her seat to the seat behind her husband as I moved next to him. Then I placed the pads of all four fingers of my right hand on his wrist. Instantly columns of brilliant white light came through my fingers and went into his wrist. The light reminded me of lightening and also a beam created as sunlight passed through a prism.

My fingers were clamped around his wrist. Then an overwhelming wave of energy came over me that nearly took my breath. A thought arose in my head, “Feel” his pulse! I could not feel it at first so I shifted my fingers slightly and found the artery. It was a very slow pulse, probably less than 50 beats per minute, and it was rather thread-like. I have no idea how long any of this took.  It did not seem very long but all of a sudden I noticed the man’s wife and the attendant were starring at me- possibly awaiting my report. I told them that I the pulse was present and it was slow!

Perhaps a minute later the man let out a loud sigh, tried to turn his head, and brush some beads of sweat. His movements were uncoordinated: he swiped at the forehead and his head jerked about. His wife stopped stroking his head and looked at me in surprise. After a few tries he did it. I released my fingers from his skin just as he moved his head toward me. He seemed to have difficulty focusing his eyes. No doubt he was probably clueless as what was happening. We all sighed with relief for it seemed the crisis was over!

As I returned to my seat a feeling of gratitude came over me. WOW! It was another amazing coincidence!

What is your most proud accomplishment thus far with your business?

I am proud that I followed my heart’s desire which has evolved into a mission and passion. I am a Nurse and part of my nursing ministry is to also be an Educator.

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you feel they don’t?

Some people may not think my services are not foundational ones, but an extra! They might put off seeing me as they do not realize the value of my services. Or they put it off classes or sessions until: life slows down, or they have more money….

Empowerment means; Fill The Well Within from Streams of Infinite Possibilities. In doing this the empowered fill their vessel first to be able to give to others!

Q & A with Dr Prevent:

What brought you to Alternative Health and the field / product you’re
involved with?

1) Well, between ages 8 to 15, I had the experience of watching my father dwindle and die due to scleroderma.

2) Later, as a practicing physician, I began to 'inventory': How well are doing or not doing with our current regimens for treating heart disease?

3) Are there better answers/therapies for our current known treatment modalities, and

4) Are there underlying / unrecognized causes for our common and/or uncommon health challenges?

So, short answer: Experience (# 1 & 2) and a desire to make it better (# 3 & 4). Just as a woman will deny, cling to, and stay in an abusive relationship, so will medicine cling to therapies

Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less:

The primary word is "LUCKY!" Lucky to have a great wife and family, lucky to have the opportunity to practice medicine, lucky to practice medicine in a patient friendly state such as Georgia, lucky to know the folks I know.

My job is to keep patients healthy and away from people like me. In our practice we try to use the best of all available modalities to test, diagnose, and treat health challenges.

Where are you from? How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?

Born in Louisville, KY when my father was in medical school. My mother is from Huntland, TN, so that and my mentally retarded sister and the wonderful institution, Orange Grove, inspired my Mom & Dad to settle here in Chattanooga in the mid -50's. My class led the last parade at Baylor School as it ended its military program. Went to college @ Emory & Henry and later, medical school @ UT in Memphis, and then Internal Medicine residency @ Erlanger Hospital.

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?

1) I wish we could all work together for "Win-Win" - be it politics, economics, or personal.

What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?

Fishing & hunting = spare time / relaxation.

I have fun poking them that are stuck on the past and unwilling to look at possibilities for improving the present and future.

Are you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?

Currently living with my girl friend who also happens to be my wife of 27 years. We have 3 children, a son and 2 daughters, all of whom are @ UT in Knoxville. Presently, we have one dog.

If you’re not in alternative health full time, what kind of work do you do?

I "work" with CHEO, and Baylor School, and Tennesseans for Health Care Freedom, and running a medical practice, and the REAL work is spending time with "Satan's time sucking assistant" --> the computer!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In an integrative medical center with a whole passle of integrative practitioners.

How would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand? How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country grow, change or etc.

It is a real privilege to be a part of this group. It is marvelous and mind boggling to watch folks step up and help to keep it going and growing. Perhaps getting more of the medical practitioners involved would be great - maybe try to get some conventions such as ACAM, Life Extension, IAOMT...?

What are you most proud of in your life?

I try to watch this because they say pride comes before the fall!!!

It was a really, neat, totally blind-sided honor to be named the CHEO practitioner of the year! Never saw it coming!

JULY 2007 CHEO Spotlight:

Jeannette Sebes McDonald
www.jwell.usana.com

(Our regular CHEO Spotlight Interviewer & Writer!)

Upon meeting Jeannette Sebes McDonald several things immediately become clear.  First, she is serious about giving women’s healthcare back to women. She is passionate about her purpose of helping women find their own intuitive voice as it relates to their health, and she insists on creating good work.

Jeannette  has found her purpose, and as life would have it, she is certain that she had to get sick to find it.  Starting at 17 she began to get debilitating headaches and have jaw troubles which were the beginnings of TMJ.  The headaches got worse and over a period of about eight years, developed into full-blown chronic pain throughout her body leaving her unable to sleep or eat or function normally.

The medical system was able to offer her prescription painkillers, but no hope of living a pain free life. At 25, she was told she would just have to learn to live with it.  When faced with the prospect of living in misery for the rest of her life, something snapped, she refused to be sentenced to that grim future, and got busy on a search of her own to help heal herself.

In graduate school, while looking for a book to write a report on for a women’s health class, she discovered ‘Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom’ by Dr. Christiane Northrup.  As she devoured the 900-page book, she felt deeply connected to the information within and began using it to heal herself.

Jeannette learned that when women change the basic emotional and energetic conditions of their lives that lead to health problems, they heal faster, more completely and with far fewer medical interventions.  Feminine wisdom is our natural gift and is very important to understand what it is and how to use it Jeannette says, women were the first healers, we’ve got to be educated on how to tap into that self- healing ability today.

Her experiences with chronic pain are in her past now, and what remains is a deep dedication to lead women out of their individual health issues naturally and holistically.  She has joined with a company called USANA Health Sciences, to help spread awareness of some of the health options available to women. Jeannette is very enthusiastic about her business, and offers an array of high quality products that improve the quality of our skin, nutrition, and vitality.

Jeannette says, “As a USANA business owner and educator aligned with the vision of Dr. Northrup, I shed light on the connection between physical, emotional and financial health and well-being.  I strive to achieve vibrant health in all these areas, while teaching others how to do the same.” There is a strong team aspect to Jeannette’s business, which takes advantage of the vast knowledge of everyone involved in it. “We really teach people to be healthy on all levels so that they can teach others, and in this way the awareness grows.”

In addition, Jeannette is continuing to follow her path of health education by designing a program to enhance patient’s overall experience at their doctor’s office and with their healing process.  The program will offer a patient a deeper understanding of their ailment through education, guidance and support.  Through one-on-one education sessions, and group sessions, the program will help to lighten the load of the practitioners, support and move forward the patients’ healing process, and improve the general efficiency of the practice and patient wellness.

“It’s a large project in the developmental stages right now, but this is what’s needed, and this is the time,” says Jeannette.  “This is my vision, and the laws of attraction and prosperity allow me to draw everything and everyone that’s needed to help this vision of wellness grow into a solid reality.”  With her philosophy of insisting on taking the time to create quality work, she is just the woman to make this happen.

Check out Jeannette at her website www.jwell.usana.com.  She can also be reached at 423.505.2350 and jaeindc@aol.com

Special Thanks to Anne Morrissey for interviewing our regular Spotlight Writer Jeannette Sebes-McDonald and writing this spotlight.

Q & A with Jeannette:

What are you most proud of in your life?

I have great pride surrounding my emergence from chronic pain.  It was a life changing span of about ten years in which doctors told me I would have to start learning how to live with the pain.  Living with the pain was not an option for me.  Healing my body’s root cause of the pain was the only option I eventually saw and so I began the long process of allowing my body to heal.  I’m proud that I was able to find the strength within myself to uncover the truths necessary to regain true health.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I love to practice yoga, work in my garden and yard, walk my dog, read, see movies, make dinner with my husband, and travel.

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

I believe fully and strongly in the benefits of integrating alternative health education into traditional medical practices and I’m determined to help make this happen.  Patients need more than fifteen minutes with their doctor.  They need a session with a health educator to help support, educate and empower them in their medical decisions.

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?

  1. My wish is for everyone to find and know the great source that is within each of us
that enables us to accomplish anything.
  1. My wish is for everyone to know that their bodies are capable of anything if provided
    with the right tools.
  1. My wish is for everyone to find a nurturing group of friends to be surrounded by.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I’ll be happy and healthy!  I’ll be empowering and educating people seeking medical care in methods and strategies to heal themselves.  I’ll be running a successful USANA business in five years.

JUNE 2007 CHEO Spotlight:

BirthingRight Midwifery

     Claudia Conn --->
<-- Debbie Schneider
(with babies:-)

www.BirthingRight.com

Meet Claudia Conn and Debbie Schneider, who both are Tennessee Licensed Certified Professional Midwives (CPM-TN) and work in partnership to provide full-scope midwifery as well as well-woman care.
Claudia has been practicing midwifery for over 25 years and working with Debbie for about 8 years, with 2 full-time apprentices. We just extended our practice, BirthingRight Midwifery, into the Chattanooga area last year.

Our strong birth team allows us to provide comprehensive 24/7 care and support to the families we serve. Our practice is firmly based on informed choice. We believe women and families have the right to determine their own care in pregnancy and birth.

Midwifery Q & A:

How safe an option is planned homebirth?

Planned homebirth with a trained attendant has been repeatedly shown to be at least as safe and by many criteria safer than hospital birth. Many studies, most of which are published in the medical literature demonstrate the safety of homebirth.

How do the studies compare birth in the U.S. with the rest of the world?

The United States with all of its material wealth and technology is now 42nd in the world in its infant mortality statistics. We stand at the very bottom of the industrialized nations. European countries with the best perinatal mortality statistics consistently incorporate direct-entry midwives and homebirth into their healthcare systems. According to Marsden Wagner, the former director of the World Health Organization, in all European countries the number of midwives outweighs the number of obstetricians and direct-entry midwives provide primary care for most pregnant women.

Has there been a study done in this country looking specifically at the safety of homebirths attended by CPMs?

Yes, there was a large study published in June of 2005 in the prestigious British Medical Journal. All practicing CPMs were required to submit extensive prospective data on all of the births attended during the year 2000.  The study showed that planned low-risk homebirths attended by CPMs are as safe as births attended in the hospital, and that there was much less intervention with home as compared to hospital birth.

Would you speak a little about pregnancy and birth interventions?

We should first clarify that many of the drugs, tests, and technologies now used in pregnancy and birth in this country undoubtedly have a time and a place and may at times be beneficial and even life-saving. The problem is that there is an escalating trend for the use of routine, non evidence-based interventions throughout the course of care. Pregnancy and birth have become highly medicalized events in this country. During their pregnancies women are exposed to extensive routine testing. In labor, common interventions include restriction of food and drink, routine IVs, restricted freedom of movement, use of electronic fetal monitoring (85% in 2003, no longer recorded), epidurals (over 80%), Pitocin induction and augmentation (67%), Artificial rupture of membranes, routine prophylactic antibiotics, forceps, vacuum extractions, and episiotomies (24%),

There are also many routine procedures and interventions that separate the mom and the baby and negatively effect bonding and the process of breastfeeding. The list of interventions and routine procedures goes on and on.

And then of course, there is cesarean section, which is in a class by itself as an intervention. One in three women now give birth in this country by C/section and the rate is rising year by year. To put this in perspective keep in mind that the C/section rate in this country was 5% from 1940 to 1970. The WHO has stated that nothing over a 10% c/section rate is justifiable.

How do these intervention statistics compare to those of planned
home birth?

Studies on planned homebirth consistently show excellent safety statistics with a fraction of the level of intervention. (For example in the CPM 2000 study the rate of epidurals was 4.7% (vs. over 80% for hospital birth), Episiotomy-2.1% vs.24%. There was a similar decrease for cited interventions across the board. As I just mentioned the overall C/section rate in this country is now at 30% and rising. The C/Section rate in the CPM 2000 study among planned homebirthers was 3.7%

Pregnancy and birth in this country have become very medicalized.
How does midwifery care affect this picture?

A useful way to look at the different philosophies and approaches to care is to think of two different models. These are usually referred to as the Medical Model of Care and the Midwives Model of Care. Much has been written about these models in the literature. Crystallizing the different approaches into models makes them easier to understand. It also removes any issues of professional mudslinging or questions of whether doctors are “better than midwives” or vice versa. This is because when we discuss models of care we are not actually talking about professions or specific professionals. It is possible, for instance, for an obstetrician to practice within the Midwives Model of Care, or for a midwife to practice predominantly in the Medical Model.

The foundation of the Midwives Model of Care is that pregnancy and birth are normal processes. To professionals practicing within the Midwives Model of Care pregnancy and birth are seen as normal life events. Caregivers keep a close eye on pregnant and birthing women to make sure that all, remains within the bounds of normalcy. But the reality is that normal healthy women, with basic low-tech care and guidance can generally be expected to have normal healthy births without the intrusion of extensive systems of intervention.

What about the emotional aspects of the experience for the mother
and family?

Birth as we experience it with families in our care is generally a joyous and celebratory event for a woman and her family. Birth involves the whole woman and the experience impacts her on every level---physical, emotional, and even spiritual and often seen as a rite of passage.

Women who give birth at home are in control and make their own choices about what’s important to them in their birth experience. They are supported and encouraged in their choices. They eat, drink, rest, and move about as they see fit. They surround themselves with people they love who will support them, or they may choose a very private experience. They typically have their husbands and perhaps their children very involved. They labor and birth where they are most comfortable, which for many women in our practice now means they are birthing in water. They work hard, and they give birth with joy and passion. Their babies are born strong and alert and welcomed directly into their mother’s arms where they are embraced, nurtured and put directly to the breast. The sanctity of the bonding experience is not disturbed.

Women are strengthened and inspired in the process. Families are strengthened by this experience. Women’s experience allows them to move forward in their lives as strong and capable mothers. They are Empowered, with a capital E!

What can women do to prepare themselves to have a healthy and positive pregnancy and birth?

First of all we recommend that women do all that they can to optimize their health before and during their pregnancies. Diet, nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle measures should all be considered. Choose a caregiver that will assist and guide you in these goals. Our care is oriented to optimizing health and thereby preventing complications from ever becoming an issue.

The other single most important recommendation is that women become informed consumers of maternity care. Educate yourself and make informed choices. Seek information and ask questions. Think about what’s important to you and choose a caregiver and the setting in which you will give birth carefully.

There is so much information available to pregnant women today. This is wonderful and doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Pregnancy and birth ARE normal processes and you don’t need to be a “rocket scientist” to gather the information you need to make good choices for yourself and your baby. There is a recent publication that is now available entitled “The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative” put out by the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, or CIMS, which is an excellent guide in helping women and families to make good and discerning choices in their pregnancy and birth care.

Can you recommend some other good sources of information for
women and families?

One of our favorite books for getting started with information important to pregnant women is called A Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth, by Henci Goer. Also, there is a wonderful book by Tennessee’s own Ina May Gaskin entitled Ina May’s Guide to Natural Birth.

The Internet, of course, is also an incredible source of information and there are many wonderful websites. We would like to recommend our own website at www.BirthingRight.com as a resource with great links to hundreds of other websites organized in a way that makes it very easy to identify areas of interest related to pregnancy and birth and to access information on those topics.

We would like to end by reiterating that it is very important that a woman ultimately give birth however and wherever she is most comfortable with the caregiver of her choice. What’s most important is that whatever a woman and family choose, that those choices be informed choices. Informed choice is probably the single most important factor in ensuring a healthy and satisfying birth experience.

Touchstone Vibrations
795 Barnsville Road, Armuchee, GA 30105   706-857-6300
faye@tsvibrations.com    www.tsvibrations.com

Faye's CHEO Listing reads:   Vibrational energy balancing.  Create wholeness, balance, harmony & joy while experiencing sound massage, lymphatic drainage therapy, eliminate EMF’s, etc. Energy dowsing, Crystal bowls, Music, Quantum Touch. Come play with us.

Meet Faye Henry, a woman with an outlook that could quite possibly transform the world.  Faye is new to the CHEO board and brings with her a palette full of skills.  Over the past few decades she has worked as an air traffic controller, a shop owner, underwater videographer and photographer, a video editor, computer programmer and web developer just to name a few.  And then on a fall day in 2001 Faye walked into an herb store looking for carrot oil and came out with a whole new path in life.

While she was in the herb store she was invited to attend a Reiki class.  Against all odds that Saturday she skeptically wound up in class.  She didn’t feel anything in class but for the first time ever she slept uncovered comfortably; previously her hands and feet were constantly cold.  She went back.  Faye knew it was working, but couldn’t feel it and so she began to read.

This led to emotional healing classes, access energy transformation classes, quantum touch study, dousing, essential oils, lymphatic drainage study and the clarity that the key to healing is sound and color.  These interests have blossomed in Faye’s life and unlike many she utilizes these skills for personal growth.  She believes that everyone has within them the capacity to heal themselves; therefore no one really needs these services.  She states, “[the public] do not really need any services, from me or anyone else.  They have all they need to be whole, healthy, balanced, and in harmony within themselves.”

Faye believes we create everything in our lives, that energy follows thought and we need only to focus on being well.  She doesn’t consider herself a healer as “healers are those who were sick and got well.”  Humbly Faye says “I’ve been fortunate to experience a lot of things and to play with them.”  May you all have the pleasure of meeting Faye Henry; she spreads great joy and truth just by being present.

Q & A with Faye

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that
you feel they don’t?

If I could tell the public one thing and them understand it, it is that they do not really need any services, from me or anyone else. They have all they need to be whole, healthy, balanced, and in harmony within themselves. They should only do things because they enjoy them, not because they have any need of them. Your thoughts and beliefs are very powerful tools, use them to create the things you want in your life, by thinking about the things you do want, and not the things you want to change.

Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less.

I am.

Where are you from?  How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?

I was born and raised in Haywood Valley, just north of Rome, Ga. Born at home, I lived there until 1972, left and came back in 1989 and now live on the same farm.

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?

1. To be love, totally aware of all that I really am, living in the now moment, each moment of each day. If this one were true, then there is nothing else that I could wish for that I would not have.

If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

Emil, the Master in the books, The Life and Times of the Masters of the Far East. I would love to be in his presence and to learn to be as he and his Mother are. If you have not read this series of books, I highly recommend them.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

At this point in time, I really do not have any spare time.

What do you do for fun?

I read, play drums, play crystal bowls, walk, ride bicycles, spin Poi, work in my flower garden, visit with friends, and go caving.

If you’re not in complementary health full time, what kind of work do you do?

I do video production, including shooting, editing, and duplication. And I work for an ad agency in Dalton.

What are you most proud of in your life?

My pilot’s license.  I was the first female to receive a pilot license in LaFayette.  This was in 1974.  I love flying.

Q & A
with Anne

What are you most proud of in your life?

I’m most proud of the fact that I have grown immensely from my challenges.  Deaths, financial setbacks, starting all over again, breakups, etc.  I’ve been fortunate to know that for some reason, I was being redirected.  I’ve learned to trust that I will be challenged and redirected from time to time, sometimes in what seems like a harsh way, but in the end I will be better and stronger and more alive for it, and while I’m not at the stage where I welcome the challenges, I know I can handle them.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

It varies.  Right now, I’m in the “cant get enough tennis” phase.  That will last for awhile and, and then I might go into a research phase, where I’m gathering all the information I possibly can about a particular subject, and immersing myself in it.  Who knows what it will be, but there will always be lots of reading and writing, shopping, biking, and being by the water, any water, but especially the ocean.

Where are you from?  How long in the Chattanooga area?

I was born and raised in Sacramento, California.  Since then I’ve lived in Washington D.C.  San Francisco, Oakland, CA, Paris France, Miami FL,  Atlanta, GA and now Chattanooga.  I moved here last July.

If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased who would it be and why?

There are so many people it’s impossible to just pick one.  I’d say the top three are Barbara Brennan, healer, scientist and therapist because I want to know where she is headed with the human energy field these days.

Deepak Chopra, because I want to talk about quantum physics and how he personally applies the principles to his own daily life.

Caroline Myss, because I love her teaching style, and I aspire to do what she does teaching on international retreats.

What is your most proud accomplishment thus far with your business?

I feel very pleased when I’ve been part of someone’s healing or someone’s AHA moment.  I feel really great when someone comes to me saying their life totally sucks and they’re depressed, and by the time we’ve done our work, they are laughing at themselves and saying my life doesn’t suck, and I’ve got a lot going for me!!!  When I can see a change in their posture, confidence and the perception of the future begin to change, I know they’re on their way, and that makes me proud.

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you feel they don’t?

I feel the public does not yet understand the nature of energy work.  People are still so conditioned to going to traditional doctors and telling them what’s wrong and expecting them to fix it.  I think people want a magic pill so they can get back to their lives back to business as usual, they see illness as a major inconvenience that they don’t have time for.

Energy therapies can have incredible results, but they are not instant miracles, and the client has to participate in the changes. Clients would do well to understand that they didn’t get to where they are overnight, and won’t be back to tip top shape overnight either.   It is not that I wave my hands over you and you are all fixed up, it is a process of understanding and unraveling your particular needs.  I think people are not yet geared to having the patience to listen to the subtle language of the body.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Within five years I will be an international teacher of mind-body-spirit medicine and understanding the language of the body and what it’s trying to tell you. I believe it’s going to take a lot of repetition for people to get that they have a lot more control over their health and well being than they have been taught they do.

I can help far more people by educating in groups than I can seeing people one on one.  I have a feeling I will be living in Acapulco, Mexico, but I’m not sure about that yet. Wherever I live, I’ll be traveling and speaking and training and doing what I love.

Hypnotherapy Works is a service provided by Sonya Naulta that I believe everyone should experience.  Sonya offers a focused, controlled way to “redesign your mind to manifest all of the positive outcomes you desire.”  Read carefully here.  I am reporting that there is a strategic and supported way to change the things in your life you wish you could change.  It is possible with the help of hypnotherapy.  Some of the issues brought to Sonya for hypnotherapy include: stress reduction, increased energy, improved sleep, weight loss, becoming a non-smoker and improving memory.

Sonya is a natural counselor.  At age seventeen she began working as a peer counselor and it was a natural fit.  She followed this wisdom, studied social work in college and went on to receive a Masters degree in Social Work from East Carolina University.  During her evolution as a therapist over the past 19 years she found great success using hypnotherapy in her counseling work, so she became a board certified clinical hypnotherapist and is living her life’s mission.  It has become her life’s work.

Imagine a peaceful environment with low lights, soft music and a steady stream of soothing thoughts being spoken to you.  This is the atmosphere you’ll find at the Hypnotherapy Works office.  Sonya teaches clients about the mind-body connection and eases the conscious mind into rest.  Having interviewed clients before the actual hypnosis, Sonya then formulates suggestions based on what the client wishes to change.  This therapy is interactive - based solely on what the client wants, with no change taking place without the client’s intention.  The easy trance you are taken into is a way to distract the conscious mind so that the unconscious mind is open and ready for suggestion.  Sonya acts only as a guide, and with Sonya Naulta as your guide you cannot go wrong.

Check out Hypnotherapy Works at http://hypnotherapy.web.aplus.net/chattanooga/index.html  or give her a call at 423.874.0155.  This is a service for anyone who has ever been interested in making profound change in their life.

Q & A with Sonya

What is the most remarkable thing you’ve seen in your business?  Inspirational story?

I told you about the client who wore hearing aids to hear, but after listening to her hypnosis tape several times she could hear her husband talking to her when she took her hearing aids out. The only explanation she came up with was that a benign suggestion of “Every sound you hear helps you relax even more,” which is a standard deepening of hypnosis suggestion, was picked up by her unconscious mind as “Every sound you hear.” I have no way of knowing which words will be accepted by the unconscious mind, which is why more than one session is usually recommended.

I have many, many remarkable stories: diabetics on insulin coming off of meds and controlling their illness with their diet and their mind… a seven year old boy who rides/drives motor cross bikes having an accident which left him afraid to ride coming to three sessions and six months later wins the national motor bike competition in Las Vegas for his weight group… people who smoked most of their lives quitting after one or two sessions… people losing a pound a day on the weight control program… so, so much more! Relationships restored; self-esteem enhanced; addictions brought under self-control (like pathological gambling for example); sports performance enhanced; sex life improved; and on and on.

How has running this business helped you personally?

I feel privileged and honored to help people connect with the resources they already have in their mind. I benefit from every contact in some way or another. I get better and better in my abilities. I have overcome obstacles that my clients and I have had in common. For example, I have a healthy lifestyle as a side effect or unintended consequence of hypnotizing so many others to have a healthy lifestyle. My unconscious mind picks and chooses which suggestions it likes, so I have the benefit of “self-hypnosis” every time I hypnotize someone else.

Tell me about how you got started in your work?

I used hypnosis to quit smoking cigarettes in 1994. I was in graduate school for a Master’s in Social Work. I found a kind of therapy that worked as good or better than all the approaches I learned in graduate school. My business is hypnotherapy, which is one model or framework with which one can use to change their thoughts, feelings and behavior so that they can achieve their goals.

What advice do you have for people looking to get into this field?

Get a good, basic education in psychology, communications and/or counseling first. Save your money because the certification process/education for clinical hypnotherapy is expensive, but worth it!

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you feel they don’t?

People don’t know that we go in and out of hypnotic trance all the time, throughout the day. It is not a mysterious, psychic phenomenon. Ever been driving and lose consciousness? Who or what is driving if you are distracted, not paying attention, but unconsciously you arrive at your destination safely? We have resources in our mind that we can tap into… we just were never taught how to access these resources.

Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less.

I am evolving and changing every day. Yet I remain the same core self inside. I love myself, but not in conceited way. I honor the God in me and the God in you. Our nature is to be divine. I am a spiritual being in a human form… a human becoming, rather than a human being. If I am to have success and happiness in this life, then I believe I must reach out and connect to others. We are all helpers and healers to each other.

Where are you from?  How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?

I was born in Portsmouth Naval Hospital, VA. My father was in the Navy and we were stationed at seven different bases on the east coast of the USA. I moved to Chattanooga from Fayetteville, NC nine years ago to be with the father of my child so we could all three be together and be a  “normal” family.

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?

This is a great therapy question. First, I wish for the race of human beings to find peace inside so we can stop warring with each other. Second, I wish for all children to be safe, which would happen if my first wish came true. Third, I wish for enough funds to have my dream home in the mountains and my dream home at the beach.

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

I am genuine, authentic and no different than anyone else. Like my nine year old daughter says, “We are all pink inside.”

If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

My core self… the spirit or soul that may or may not have lived many lifetimes before… I want to connect deeply and integrate all my parts so that I am one unified whole. I think my core self is connected to all of the great people that come to my mind that I would like to talk to, like Jesus or Buddha or Confucius or Socrates or Mary Magdalene or Martin Luther King, Jr. or Joan of Arc… so many more!

What do you like to do in your spare time?  What do you do for fun?

I play with my daughter when she is with me. When she is with her father, I have fun with my friend Billy. We like to go hiking, sight-seeing and we cook together. We have an interesting relationship. When I am alone, I love reading books about NLP, spirituality, metaphysics and such… I also love watching movies. I would like to do more workshops and see more clients. My work is fun!

If you’re not in complimentary health full time, what kind of work do you do?

I work full-time for Fortwood Center, Inc., which is a non-profit, United Way Agency that provides Mental Health services to children, adolescents and adults. I am a Level One Case Manager for Adult Services, which means I work with adults that have severe and persistent mental illness and often substance abuse problems. I work much like a “coach,” but also I help them with daily living tasks. It is a challenge and an adventure everyday with my Fortwood clients.

What are you most proud of in your life?

I am a good mother.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I will be working my private practice full-time and working for Fortwood part-time.

How would you like to see this business grow, change or expand?  How would you like to see complimentary health in this country grow, change or etc.?

I personally would like to create a school where I can teach what I have learned. I would like to see Complementary Health Care practices to be right along side of traditional health care practices. I would like to see an integration of services that treat and prevent across the broad spectrum of human experience. Treatment of the person as a whole with all the different disciplines collaborating, working together to create the best possible outcomes for all of us.

Linda Althoff owns Living Better Systems and markets products from Ecoquest International, which simply stated, create a cleaner and healthier indoor environment where people live and work. However, just being around Linda will transform your energy.  She offers you the chance to enhance your physical self and surroundings through air and water purification systems, whole food supplements, natural skin care, and many other household products.  When you meet Linda to discuss the bevy of products that will help create for you a better environment you will find that she can also help you create a better life.

Linda is a networker by nature; her personality is vibrant; her conversation is easy and her vibrational energy is magnetic.  Like many of us she was led to spiritual and alternative health through experiences in her personal life and found herself at home.  For years she has marketed different businesses, and in 1997 found a company with products that were aligned with her personal philosophies and products that could really help people live a healthier life.

Ecoquest she said “fit me personally.”  She believes everything is vibrational and that our bodies are our biggest teachers.  In order to have a healthy business with Ecoquest she works to maintain her own vibrational energy.  She believes in the power and laws of attraction and circulation and works through herself to better her business.  In her words, she has found a way to “infuse myself into my business.”  When you are as positively vibrational and magnetic as Linda, you are bound to offer to clients exactly what they need.

Please check out www.ecoquest.com/livingbettersystems for details on the products offered or call 706.861.1579 for direct contact with an amazing woman who all of us can benefit from.

Q & A
with Linda Althoff

What led you into this business and opening up your own place?

A friend introduced me to this business. I love the fact that the products benefit everyone, especially those with environmental sensitivities and issues. I also love the fact that I can help people financially with the business opportunity, which can be part-time or full-time and flexible around the business owner's personal schedule.

What is the most remarkable thing you’ve seen in your business? Inspirational story?

There are so many amazing stories about how the products have helped people, but the most remarkable one is about the business opportunity. There was a man who was practically homeless - living with friends. Had gone thru a divorce, lost his business and his car. A friend told him about a meeting 30 miles away that was about the Ecoquest Opportunity and he hitchhiked there. Someone loaned him the money to become a dealer and get one air purifier. The next day he began walking - carrying the unit - to show people who had allergies, asthma, mold or mildew problems, etc how the air purifier worked. He began to sell some and then bought an old car that would hardly run. He began to share the opportunity with others and drive his old car to different cities to share the business opportunity and show the product. He couldn't go faster than 30 miles an hour in his old car. He became successful and was making a six figure income before long and was helping many people. His determination and persistence in the face of such challenges has inspired me and many others.

What is your most proud accomplishment thus far with your business?

I have several thousand business associates in my Ecoquest organization and many of them have become very close friends. I enjoy helping new business owners start their businesses and become successful.

Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less. Where are you from? How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?

I was born and raised in Knoxville TN. I moved to Chattanooga in 1970 and have lived here ever since except for 6 mo.s in Jacksonville FL and 2 years in Augusta GA

I owned another business from 1987 until I started my Ecoquest business in 1997 when I sold my other business (I had a distributorship with Safeguard Business Systems) I love the time freedom and flexibility with my Ecoquest business. I also love meeting people and helping them with the products and financial opportunity.I have found that network marketing allows a person to create income by using the Spiritual principles such as: The Law of Circulation, The Law of Commitment, The Law of Karma (what you do to/for others you do to/for yourself). It is easy to see what is going on inside of you by how your business is flowing (or not).

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?

1.That myself and everyone could live our lives receiving the Abundance of good health, financial prosperity, loving relationships and peace and joy by letting go of our fears and negative beliefs.

2.To live my life according to my purpose for being here

3. To share what I have learned with others

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

For me, loving others and being loved is the most fulfilling part of this lifetime.

If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

Jesus - because He taught the Spiritual Principles for Living the Abundant Life.

What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?

I like to play with my grandchildren, talk with my friends, go walking, four wheeling and hiking in the woods, reading, go to the movies, dancing - just about anything that is fun. I love to play.

What are you most proud of in your life?

Overcoming limiting beliefs instilled in me as a child and young adult so I can be happier and more fulfilled now. I am very proud of my son and daughter who have become remarkable adults and parents.

Elaine Paris & Sue Ruzicka
of Feng Shui Etc.

The Chinese often use the term "Fortunate Blessings" to mean success and fortune.  With over 3500 clients served since 1992, “Feng Shui Etc.” is a business guided by a gentle balance of energy with Sue Ruzicka, Ed.D. and Elaine Paris.  These ladies offer a variety of services to help clients become aware of how their lives are affected by the flow or stagnation of Chi, the Life Force Energy.

In 1990 Sue went to seminary school after her mother passed away, marking a shift and transition in her life.  It was in seminary school where Sue became immersed in spiritual teachings, the study of sound therapy, Feng Shui and many different healing modalities.  She found the common thread among these studies to be Chi, the Life Energy Force.  It became clear to her while in the seminary how important it is to follow the path being presented, and opened Feng Shui Etc.

Some Feng Shui Etc. services include: Feng Shui Evaluation (on site or distance), space clearing, land selection, dowsing, new construction review, personal inner Feng Shui, and other related services.

A Feng Shui consultation is set up ahead of time.  During initial contact, the importance of respect for the information to be transferred and Chi and its balance is explained.  An example of Chi that may be explored during a consultation is: If the Chi is rushing too fast, it needs to be slowed down; just as the Chi is rushing by, so is your money and your energy.  Is your front door opposite your back door or a stairway?  Is your bedroom or office at the end of a long hallway?  Do you have fast moving water near your house?  These are some examples of areas that have rushing Chi. As you take steps to slow down the rushing Chi, it encourages more prosperity to support your goals by helping you to get more clarity and to release the confusion that runs with the fast pace of life.

During the consultation, Sue and Elaine walk with the client through the space and identify challenges that may be occurring in the person’s life.   Recommendations are made.  As Sue explains, “how the energy flows in that space affects you in an unconscious way,” and so adjustments are recommended to change the patterns in the space.  Our houses are our “sacred spaces, they connect us with who we are,” says Sue and “allowing energy to flow through this space in an optimal manner will bring change into your life.”

Your surroundings and the reflections of your environment can influence everyone who enters your home in a positive or negative way.  It is the client that chooses how they will adjust their environment based on the suggested recommendations.  Changes made from these recommendations can change the course of your life and bring health, happiness and prosperity.

Q & A
with Sue Ruzicka, Ed.D.

Where are you from originally?  How long have you been in the Chattanooga area?

I was originally born in Oak Ridge, TN but my family moved when I was 3 years old to North Augusta, SC where I lived until I graduated from college.  This was my family's home until 1988 when my Mother passed away.  I am the last surviving member of my family.  This is where I learned a big lesson about clutter and the energy connected to the things we have.  I have been living in Cookeville, TN for 6 years and go to Chattanooga several times a month.

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?

a.  For each of us to be present and conscious in the now.  Loving and respecting ourselves and each other.

b.  To help the Feng Shui of Chattanooga & Tennessee one home and business at a time.

c.  For peace and respect for Planet Earth.

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

That we help others realize that their living space is a sacred space and that by getting in touch from that perspective, they realize the inter-connectedness between the outer and the inner space of who they are as a soul essence.

What do you do for fun?

I love to sing and play my guitar.  I also love to play goft, swim, and hike.

What is the most remarkable thing you’ve seen in your work thus far?

We worked closely with a large organization in St. Louis, MO. for the past two years on a new facility.  During that two year period we worked with the floor plan of the new facility as well has enhancing their existing facility utilizing Feng Shui to help them meet their financial and expansion goals.  It was important that the business continued to function in all aspects, but particularly fund raising to have the money to pay for the new facility.  We worked with them from the planning stage through the completion of a new facility.  During this two year period  the organization raised over three times the money needed to fund the project, completed the building of the new facility on schedule and moved all staff into the new building facility in time for their most busy time of the year.  This was a $4 million dollar project of which $10 million was raised.

How has running this business and being involved with Feng Shui helped you personally?

It has helped me see the energetic power of the things we have around us in our living and our work space.  Everything has energy.  Everything that is alive has live energy and dead things such as dried flowers  have dead energy.  The importance of keeping things current and in the present is very important.  This keeps us all in the present.  The balance between things and space is very important.

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you feel they don’t?

Feng Shui is an oral tradition that is passed on from master to student.  There are over 100 different schools of Feng Shui and there are now many books on Feng Shui.  It is difficult for an individual to apply the principles of Feng Shui to their own space because they are too close to their own space.  They see their space everyday and it impacts them energetically.  We see your space with trained and experienced eyes that can help you see the reflection of things going on in your life.  The great thing about Feng Shui, is once we identify your challenges, we provide solutions that will help you improve your life.  We get results with the Feng Shui work that we do!

Sheila Pope

Interview & article by Jeannette Sebes-McDonald

Sheila Pope’s card reads Modern Christian Mystic and that she is; but simply stated this woman is a healer.  She practices in the field of energy medicine as a medical intuitive; offering readings, workshops, spiritual retreats, reiki, parties with purpose and a whole host of services to enable healing.  A meeting with Sheila is a meeting that will transform your body, mind and spirit.

At the age of seven Sheila offered her first diagnostic by telling her mother that the man sitting behind them was sick.  While this gift was always present it was not always understood.  It was not until she was thirty-nine that she came to accept and understand that she possessed an ability to both intuit energy forms and then remove them in order to stimulate healing.   Energy forms needing removal are referred to as emotional waste.  This gift began as a survival tool for Sheila, as she battles her own physical illnesses, and has transformed and grown into a healing ministry she considers to be her birthright.

A meeting with Sheila is a blessing.  Clients will get a sense of complete attunement rooted in truth.  With sessions lasting thirty minutes or an hour clients can utilize what Sheila believes is a “constant state of awe.”  She feels that the client’s blessings are always her blessings.  Sheila brings to her clients the knowledge that “there is a way to get better even in the darkest moments” and feels that the information provided “can change life.”

NOTE: Sheila has a host of new endeavors unfolding, i.e.: weekly healing groups, medical management classes, etc.  For more information about Sheila’s services please call 423.313.7673 or 423-313-2390 or send her an email at realdealreading@yahoo.com.

 Q & A with Sheila:

What are the five things the public should know about holistic health but doesn’t?

It should be called supportive healing

It should never be used in replacement of medical care.

It should be used with discernment

God sends the perfect supportive health care to you when you pray for the way.

To be whole is to bring all three aspects of living to a balance…. Mind, body and spirit.

What brought you to Alternative Health and the field you’re involved with?
I struggled for five decades with an undiagnosed rare genetic disorder by the name of Ehlers-Danlos. I became proactive in my own healing and realized how little I knew When I had breast cancer I had to “Listen Up” to get the point. I really didn’t understand how intuitive I was until my cancer treatment kicked in. I heard a real sweet voice that guided me to doctors, therapist and books on healing the spirit. I went to a psychologist for evaluation. After three weeks of therapy he told me I was intuitive.

What a shock. However, hindsight is so clear. That was what started my career. Two years later I had a stroke. The same sweet voice directed me through recovery. My Neurologist told me when he released me, “If you don’t teach others what you did to heal then you’re not doing your job!” I work by those words. I feel I was given a new life to live and my testimony is very simple. I am walking, talking, and living proof spiritual healing works.

What services do you offer?
As an intuitive I offer readings and spiritual counseling. I prefer being called a Faith Healer.  I offer private workshops and parties with purpose. I am a keynote speaker and love to speak at churches and support groups. Bible study is one of my favorite offerings. I offer free Reiki instruction to anyone with chronic illness. I am a teacher, published writer and a speaker.

Where are you originally from, and how long in the Greater Chattanooga area?
Mobile Alabama. Twenty years in Chattanooga.

If you had three wishes, what would they be in order of importance?
First I would wish for enough money to provide patients with soft tissue disorders handicapped toilets.  Second I would wish for peace… in minds and spirits so bodies can heal the wounds of past trauma and abuse. Third I would wish for the money to take Bob to Pearl Harbor and really enjoy a week at the beach.

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?
My gifts are from God. I had to unwrap them slowly by using prayer combined with constant discernment and good common sense.

If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?
Jesus Christ… Because I have so many questions only he could answer.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I write short stories for healing and dealing in daily life.

What do you do for fun?
I snuggle or walk with my dog and recharge my battery.

What are you most proud of in your life?
My daughter because she is strong willed and honest to the bone! Her intellect goes beyond worldly wisdom and she will be a great spiritual therapist and teacher in her own right.

Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less
I demystify and simplify energetic healing and give a sense of hope to those who lost it along the way. As a Faith Healer I open the door for hope so others can find faith. We are what we believe and to have faith is the ultimate place for healing. Clients unable to pay are always welcome.

NOVEMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JEAN TERRY

Interview Q & A by CHEO Member Jeannette Sebes-McDonald jaeindc@aol.com
             Thank you Jeannette!

JSM: What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

JT: I truly enjoy what I do.  I love meeting people and making new friends.  I consider this my ministry, and if my clients need to talk, I’m there to listen.  If they need me to laugh with them, cry with them, help them with a problem or pray for them…. then that’s what I’ll do.

What services do you offer?

Detoxification footbath therapy, a preventative health booklet, whole-food nutritional supplements, air and water purification, and nontoxic cleaning products.

Tell me about how you got started in your work?

My interest in alternative health started from my own personal struggles and accelerated several years ago with a desperate attempt to help a friend who was dying from colon cancer.  Although I was unable to help him, it birthed a burning desire to find out what we are doing wrong that there is so much sickness around us.  My preventative health booklet is a result of all the information I gained during this process and my way of educating as many people as possible.  I am planning to revise it very soon to include the new things I have learned over the last year.  Its title is “Why Are We All Getting SICK?”, and it is subtitled “Things you may be doing or not doing that could be contributing to your poor health”.  This pretty much sums up what it’s about, but it also offers the reader many products and services that I have personally tried and found to be beneficial.  In the back of the book is a resource guide listing names, addresses, telephone numbers and websites for all the items printed in bold within the book.  This part of the book is tailored to the Chattanooga area (with exception of the websites).

The detoxification footbath part of my business began with my association with June Drennon.  She is my colon hydrotherapist, and has become a valued friend.  Without her encouragement and belief in me, I would probably never have attempted to step out and do any of this.  She demonstrated the Libra Litrou footbath machine by doing a treatment on me.  I was so impressed with the results that I took a machine home with me that day.  After seeing how it has benefited my clients, I feel compelled to focus my business around this service.

What is the one thing you want the public to understand about your services that you feel they don’t?

Usually when I tell people what I do, they get this puzzled look on their face and say “ohhhhhhhh, hummmm, that’s different”.   I felt the same way when I first heard about this therapy.  But I took the machine home and ran it thru a series of tests to see if it truly did what it was supposed to.  I used it on myself, my family, and my friends.  I also tried it in conjunction with other therapies and situations, with different kinds of water, and even ran the machine without putting feet in the water.  The results were very impressive.  If it didn’t really remove toxins, I would not be offering the service.  With the amount of toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis, our bodies are working overtime.  This uses up energy that is needed to maintain all the other bodily processes.  The bottom line is; if we don’t get rid of the toxins, our bodies cannot function properly …..resulting in illness.  Helping your body detoxify is probably one of the most important things we can do to maintain good health.  Doing a series of detoxification footbaths is a great way to quickly eliminate some of the toxic overload, and a great place to start on your road to better health.

Where are you from?  How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?

I was born and raised in the Chattanooga area.  I have lived here all of my life, except for a few years in Florida.

Are you married, have you ever been married, etc?  Kids? Pets?

Yes, my husband’s name is Rick.  We have three children, Brian 34, Jenny 31, and Jason 23.  We have four precious grandchildren, Megan 10, Jaden, 8, Amber 5, and Keith who was born the second week of September.  Don’t get me started about my grandbabies……that’s my passion.  I love being a grandmother.  We also have a huge tabby cat named Hobo and a springer spaniel mix dog named Princess.

What do you like to do in your spare time?  What do you do for fun?

I’m very family oriented, and my favorite thing to do is spend time with my grandchildren.  We enjoy making crafts, singing silly songs, and dancing.  I have a strong desire to learn more about health, so I spend a lot of time reading and researching.  My husband and I also do volunteer work for a local Christian organization.

What are you most proud of in your life?

The way my life has turned out.   The first part of my life was not a pretty picture.  I suffered with clinical depression until I was 39, and I made a lot of bad choices out of my pain.  I never dreamed that I would know the happiness that I experience now.  But I am living proof that God still performs miracles.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I currently work out of a rented space, but I someday hope to have my own health shop.  My main focus at this time is learning all I can on detoxification and specializing in that field.  I have many ideas on how I’d like to expand into educating clients through lectures, seminars, videos, audio programs and classes.  Another thought is possibly offering an organic soup/salad bar with healthy smoothies and fresh organic fruit and vegetable juices.  I want to take some courses and learn other skills.  I am very interested in reflexology, nutrition, herbology, and iridology.  If I’m gonna dream, I may as well dream BIG!  J

How would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand?  How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country grow, change or etc.?

CHEO is already growing, changing and expanding so much from when I first started attending the meetings almost a year ago.  The directory is awesome, and I think the health fair is going to really “get the word out there”.  As for changes in medical and alternative health in this country, more people are starting to question traditional medical care.  Some insurance providers are now offering employers discounts on premiums if their employees take an active role in their own health.  Insurance companies in other states are even giving discounts to homeowners for having air purification systems that kill mold and mildew.  More and more articles on the benefits of nutrition and herbs are appearing in magazines, in newspapers, and on television.  I’d really like to see insurance providers cover alternative therapies and nutritional supplements.  That would be the thing that would add credibility to our services, and I think we would see a major shift to preventative health instead of treating illnesses after the fact.

Q&A:

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Doing what I’m doing now; servicing as much of the community as my business can support and loving my family and friends.

What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

How deeply I want to help; how much joy I get out of feeling healthy and happy.

Where are you from?  How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?

I’m from Gainesville, Florida; came here about fifteen years ago.  I came here with the intention of it being brief, it was a dramatic shift.

Madia’s Studio located in the historic Southern Saddlery Building on Broad Street is a place of healing, nurturance and positive energy.  The studio specializes in helping clients to live more fully by providing yoga classes, massage and skin therapy, personal training sessions, belly dancing, pilates fusion and more.  Walking into this holistic health studio is like walking into a safe haven where all your daily stresses melt away.

Madia Swicord’s intrigue with the mind-body connection began while reading The Biology of Hope by Norman Cousins over fifteen years ago and began what would become her lifelong passion.  Already a personal trainer she then armed herself with psychology and exercise physiology degrees and later studied massage therapy.  As a person who thrives with challenge she opened the studio in 2000 giving Chattanoogans an alternative to everyday fitness.

Clients are greeted and made to feel special each time they enter the studio.  There is a sense that Madia and her staff are truly vested in your happiness.  Class at Madia’s is an experience of mindfulness, relaxation and inspiration.  As a movement teacher she teaches her students the gift of being present in mind and body.  “Are you at your perfect edge?” is a question you will often hear asked at Madia’s.  Finding your edge in fitness and in life is something Madia strives to impart to her clients.  The studio embodies a sense of presence, warmth and an automatic push to live more fully.  It is a place where authentic experience comes easily, a sanctuary where you can find your own healing abilities and an alternative to traditional health.

Learn more about Madia’s Studio and upcoming events, including a meditation workshop at their website, www.madiastudio.com, or visit at 3085 S. Broad, Chattanooga, TN  37408, phone: 423-267-0007.

September 2006:  ROBERT BECKER
Clinical Hypnotherapist and EFT Practitioner, Rob was our September 2006 CHEO Speaker

   Q & A with Rob:

·    Tell us about yourself in 60 words or less

After many years of living a typical pattern of 'child, student, husband, dad, business career person' I realized that, like the rest of us, I'm actually a spiritual being having a physical experience. And that the most important part of that was the spiritual.  So I shifted my focus to the growth of that part of me and I moved to doing work that reflected my inner beliefs.

·    What brought you to Alternative Health and the field/product you’re involved with?

Its really an out growth of what started as a spiritual journey about 30 years ago.  One concept lead to another and soon the Alternative Health approach was the only thing that made sense.

I then began to study various health and healing modalities.  I became a Reiki Master and taught that for several years.  I then became certified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist and while practicing that I learned EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).  After using EFT for a while I realized that it was a powerful, simple and very effective techinque for addressing both emotional and physical blockages in the body's energy system.  In addition, it is easy to teach so that after a few sessions my clients have developed a resource that they can use for themselves for the rest of their lives.

That last part is very important to me. Part of my dream is to be able to work with people in a way that both helps them create the changes they want to make in their lives AND at the same time teachs them something that they can use on their own as they go forward.  Being able to give them new resources to access their own abilities is a large part of what I consider success.

·    Where are you from? How long in the Greater Chattanooga area?

I was born and raised in New York City and over the years I've lived in several areas of the US. About a year ago I moved from New Jersey to Chattanooga.

·    What is the one thing you would most like us to know about you?

I think that would be the level of passion that I have for my work.  My work as a counselor/coach is an extension of my personal beliefs about life and about using and maximizing the innate creative abilities we all have.  Its become very important to me to communicate that message to everyone that I work with.

·    Are you married, have you ever been married, etc? Kids? Pets?

My wife made her transition earlier this year.  I have 4 grown children who all live up North.  They are all married with children of their own. My children are all very supportive of my work but they often look puzzled and 'scratch their heads' when I tell them what's coming next.

·    If you’re not in alternative health full time, what kind of work do you do?

I'm now in Alternative Health work full time.  My former business career was as a corporate Human Resources executive with a great deal of emphasis on counseling managers and employees.

·    What do you like to do in your spare time? What do you do for fun?

Mostly I read.  I love to learn ... to look at new ideas and push the limits of my own thinking.  I also do a great deal of walking.  Lastly, is photography, which has been a life long hobby.

·    If you could have lunch with any person, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

That's easy - my wife.  She taught me more about life and love than everyone else I ever met all put together.  It was through her and with her that life took on real meaning for me.

·    What are you most proud of in your life?

I'm most proud of who I am and where I am right now.  Not because I think I'm anything so special but because that represents all that I have done and all that I have experienced.  Actually, some of that is not so pretty but its what has brought me to today.

This is also the most exciting time of my life because "now" is the only moment in which I (we) can create.  That's obviously not an original thought but its certainly one we can all consider.

·    Where do you see yourself in five years?

At the moment I have no plans for five years from now.  This is a very interesting time in my journey.  I'm going to work as hard as I can doing what I'm doing and be open to whatever opportunities are presented.

·    How would you like to see this organization grow, change or expand? How would you like to see medical and alternative health in this country grow, change or etc.

I'm new to both CHEO and the Chattanooga area so I'm not yet really clear on either what the local needs are or the best way to meet them.  I would certainly like to see CHEO become both a focal point for public information on Alternative Health Care options in this area and a key networking opportunity for all the members.

There's not enough room or time to cover the changes needed in health care in the country.  Ideally, if we could take the fraud and corruption out of the health care/insurance industries as they stand today we could make health care, including alternative health care, available to all.  There's a dream for you!

Rob schedules appointments at Stillpoint Health Associates and Nutrition World. Rob can be reached at 423-847-0111, 423-827-4880 cell, or email him at: rabecker@comcast.net.  Rob was our featured speaker at our September CHEO Meeting, Sunday, Sept. 17th, 2-4 pm MMTC, his topic: "Emotional Freedom Techinque -- EFT."
